Top 10 | Love is Louder

All you need is love

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for … Valentine’s Day! In all seriousness, maybe we do need a yearly reminder to love each other. To be kind to one another. Because guess what? Kindness doesn’t cost a thing, so let’s sprinkle it everywhere. This Valentine’s Day spread love and remember to love yourself. Love is louder.

In the meanwhile, here are a few tracks that’ll get you in a lovey-dovey mood.

celine dion

10. “My Heart Will Go On” by Céline Dion

  • Why you should listen to it: Because it’s the most iconic movie song of all times. Because it gives hope. Hope that true love exists. Hope that Leo and Kate will end up together. And most importantly, hope that Jack survived and hopped on that floating door with Rose.

9. “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green

  • Why you should listen to it: The flexibility of Al Green's voice is something to marvel at. He can croon, shout, scat, rise to the smoothest of falsettos, and throw in the funkiest growls, all in the course of a single tune.
  • “Oh baby / Let's, let's stay together (gether) /Lovin' you whether, whether / Times are good or bad, happy or sad” still gives me butterflies. This song is a little slice of heavenly love.

Soul for the Soul

8. “I’ll Make Love To You” by Boyz II Men

  • Why you should listen to it: To quote Kate Winslet in The Holiday: “I'm looking for corny in my life.” This 1994 hit song is corny, yes – but it's so sweetly done, and with such undisputed talent that all you'll want to do is throw rose petals everywhere and roll around in them.

7. “I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts

  • Why you should listen to it: Ross and Rachel. Monica and Chandler. Joey and … Hugsy? All these iconic couples made us believe in true love and that even if you’re on a break for a while … it simply doesn’t matter. Because in the end: “I'll be there for you / (When the rain starts to pour) / I'll be there for you / (Like I've been there before)” *cue hand claps*

6. “Ain’t No Mountain High” by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell

  • Why you should listen to it: A classic Motown combination of pop sweetness and soulful fire. The lyrics present a promise between two lovers who keep their separation from diminishing the feelings they have for each other by promising to always be there in a time of need: "Ain't no mountain high enough / Ain't no valley low enough / Ain't no river wide enough / To keep me from getting to you, babe."
  • Cue the lipsync scene in Remember the Titans (the best energetic lip-synching scene)

5. “All of Me” by John Legend

  • Why you should listen to it: The lyrics. The sexy piano. The relentless chorus. Oh, and, John Legend’s LEGENDARY VOICE. Check it out. P.S. If you fall in love with John after this, the only thing I can tell you is: get in line.

4. “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz

  • Why you should listen to it: The only folk-pop love song you need. This nursery rhyme-like song has a joyful happy-hippie chord progression that makes it one of the catchiest love songs of the 2000s. And it was written by Jason Mraz in 15 minutes.
  • Where to find it:

3. “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon5

  • Why you should listen to it: A chorus that sings of unrequited love and ends up lingering in your head for days. A music video worthy of its own soap opera spinoff. Maroon 5 checked all the right boxes with this beautifully mellowed single. This is Adam Levine at its storytelling best and “She Will Be Loved” remains one of their most captivating tales to this day.
  • Where to find it:

2. “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

  • Why you should listen to it: Ed Sheeran’s version of wedding vows. Nuff said.
  • Where to find it:

Pop Remixes

1. “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis

  • Why you should listen to it: Because it’s the first song off the period mix Ashton Kutcher made for Natalie Portman in No Strings Attached. Duh.
