Every classical genre has its own Christmas classic

Christmas Oratorio

Watching this work is a Holiday tradition.

It won’t come as a surprise to learn that J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) is a must-see for lovers of choral music. Christmas Oratorio consists of six parts which were first performed during the period between Christmas 1734 and the Epiphany in 1735. Today, the first three parts are performed on December 24th to the 26th and on January 1st.

Stingray Brava will broadcast all six parts of Christmas Oratorio on December 25 at 21:00 CET in a performance by the Collegium Vocale under the baton of Philippe Herreweghe.

The Nutcracker

What’s more joyful than watching an enchanting ballet performance with the whole family? Settled around the Christmas tree, dolls, mice, fairies, and princes come to life. Besides its popular melodies, the ballet also gained its popularity because it is a timeless tale for young ones. Today, multiple ballet companies program Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker during Christmas.

Stingray Brava will broadcast The Nutcracker December 25 at 14:00 CET and December 26 at 21:00 CET. Enjoy a magnificent rendition by the world-renowned ballet of the Mariinsky Theater, led by conductor Valery Gergiev!

Hansel and Gretel

A fairy tale opera with playful characters and folk tunes! Engelbert Humperdinck’s magnum opus (don’t confuse the German composer with the English easy-listening singer, they are not related!) To classical music lovers, the name Humperdinck has become a synonym for Hänsel und Gretel, an opera based on the story by the Grimm brothers. Humperdinck completed the opera in 1892 and 1893 after his sister Adelheid asked him to add a story to music.

Stingray Brava will broadcast Hänsel und Gretel on December 24 at 21:00 CET and December 26 at 14:00 CET.  Discover a rendition by the Vienna Opera accompanied by Daniela Sindram and Ileana Tonca as leading roles. Two sopranos? That’s right!
