Totó La Momposina

Totó La Momposina es una carismática leyenda viva de la canción afrocolombiana, la 'Reina de la Cumbia' original, cuya vida entera se ha dedicado a representar la música de la costa caribeña de su país. Totó ha sido fundamental para mantener estas tradiciones musicales vivas, llevándolas a un público internacional. Ella continúa trabajando incansablemente para promover la música de su tierra natal, impulsada por la pasión y la alegría de la interpretación. En el 2006 recibió el premio WOMEX Lifetime Achievement Award, en el 2011 recibió el Premio Nacional de Vida y Trabajo del Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia y en el 2013 el Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mercedes Sosa

Mercedes Sosa, la cantante folclórica argentina es conocida en toda América Latina como “La voz de los sin voz”. Su repertorio políticamente cargado, siempre fue representado con una voz potente, terrenal y apasionada. Ella es sinónimo de lucha, resistencia y libertad. Su carrera abarcó casi seis décadas, lanzó 70 álbumes, ganó tres premios Grammy Latinos y recibió varios títulos honoríficos, incluido el premio Fondo de Desarrollo de las Naciones Unidas para la Mujer (Unifem) en reconocimiento a su defensa de los derechos de la mujer.

Celia Cruz

Celia Cruz "La Reina De La Salsa" interpretó canciones dedicadas a México y Cuba. Se enfocó en la pertenencia a la comunidad latina en los Estados Unidos y adoptó elementos africanos y afrocubanos en su personalidad. Su eslogan "¡Azúcar!" aludía a la historia cubana y a la violencia de la esclavitud. Caracterizada por sus vestidos lujosos, pelucas extravagantes y tacones excéntricos, Celia llegó a grabar alrededor de 70 álbumes, obtuvo 23 discos de oro y recibió numerosos premios y distinciones, incluidos dos premios Grammy y tres premios Grammy Latino.

Ana Tijoux

Ana Tijoux esta entre las 100 mujeres inspiradoras e influyentes del 2020 según la BBC. Ella es una activista social muy comprometida con la defensa de la condición femenina. Ana Tijoux, es la voz de las mujeres que callan por la violencia de género. Durante más de 20 años, la rapera ha denunciado las desigualdades e injusticias sociales a través de sus canciones. p>

Ivy Queen

Antes de que el reguetón fuera un género fácilmente identificable, y mucho antes de la presencia mundial de los movimientos de justicia impulsados por las redes sociales, Ivy Queen estaba haciendo música que se enfocaba en las experiencias de las mujeres. Ivy Queen se convirtió en la primera mujer miembro de The Noise. Para cuando lanzó su tercer álbum, Diva, el reguetón estaba en vísperas de un crossover global y su álbum preparó el terreno para ello. Su canción "Yo quiero bailar" se convirtió en un himno para las mujeres de todo el mundo. Ivy Queen dijo: “El reguetón hablaba de mujeres y culos y yo hablaba de empoderamiento” Ivy Queen allanó el camino para la nueva generación de reguetoneras de hoy.!

Shakira

La cantante colombiana Shakira es una de las artistas latinas más exitosas de los últimos años y ha obtenido un gran reconocimiento internacional. Ella sabe lo que se necesita para hacer música que le hable a la gente. Con dieciocho álbumes, ha ganado 324 premios de 713 nominaciones, incluidos 3 premios Grammy y 12 premios Grammy latinos, lo que la convierte en una de las artistas latinas más premiadas de todos los tiempos. Su organización benéfica, Los Pies Descalzos Foundation llamada así por su primer álbum revelación, ayuda a los niños pobres de todo el mundo.

Ana Gabriel

López cambió el panorama de Hollywood, aumentando sin ayuda la representación latina en el cine, la televisión y la moda. JLo recibio el premio Billboard 'Women in Music Icon' del 2020, se ubicó en el número uno de los "100 hispanos más influyentes" de People en Español en el 2007 y, en el 2012, encabezó la lista Forbes Celebrity 100.

Gloria Estefan

La cantante y compositora Gloria Estefan originalmente saltó a la fama en la década de 1970 al unirse a Miami Sound Machine. A medida que avanzaba hacia una carrera discográfica en solitario, y se convirtió en una de las primeras artistas latinas en lograr un gran éxito en todo el mundo. Si hubo una canción esencial del pop latino de los 80 que capturó la esencia de la década, es "Conga" de Miami Sound Machine. Esta y las otras canciones del álbum Primitive Love sentaron las bases para el pop latino tal como lo conocemos hoy. Gloria Estefan fusión de pop, disco y salsa vendió 100 millones de álbumes y ganó siete premios Grammy. Simon and Garfunkel: Songs of America / The Harmony Game

I have a friend who likes Paul Simon. Check that. “I LOVE Paul Simon!” she’ll exclaim whenever we talk about music.

Simon was the genius half of Simon and Garfunkel. He wrote all those great songs, helped arrange them, and sang half of them. And it was Paul, not Art, who went on to a prolific solo career.

But guess what? There are reasons to love Artie, too. In the double-feature film, Songs of America / The Harmony Game, Garfunkel’s valuable contributions, beyond his glistening soprano and gorgeous harmonies, are brought to surface. Especially in The Harmony Game, produced in 2010 with interviews of Simon, Garfunkel, invaluable engineer Roy Halee, and others, Artie shines. He came up with that beautiful instrumental bridge in “The Boxer.” When Simon was certain “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was finished, Garfunkel encouraged an additional verse, and, in the studio, Simon came up with “Sail on, silver bird…” Magic.

And it was when Garfunkel took a leave, to go and act in the film, Catch-22, in Mexico, that Simon was inspired to write “The Only Living Boy in New York.” “So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright,” was also for Artie, who’d been an architecture major in college.

All of this tells us how, despite the numerous breakups, including one after their teenaged run as “Tom and Jerry,” and one right after the making of their greatest album, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfunkel were bonded for life.

The making of Bridge is the focus of The Harmony Game. The doc repeats segments from Songs of America, a TV special produced by the actor, Charles Grodin, and aired on CBS in 1969. Despite the repetitive moments, the films offer one revelation after another, of the guys backstage and onstage, of their concerns that their songs address social concerns—war, hunger, inequality; of the musical process, whether it’s Simon’s composing or the addition of the supergroup of L.A. session players, “The Wrecking Crew,” featuring drummer Hal Blaine, bassist Joe Osborn, and pianist Larry Knechtel. They were also known as “The Hollywood Golden Trio.”

But they had nothing on the Queens Golden Duo. The five of them, along with Halee and other behind-the-scenesters, produced some of the finest music in pop history.

I love them all.

BELLFLOWER, the nine-piece indie-folk, jazz act from Montreal recently released their second full-length album, Upside Down. I was in attendance for their album launch a few weeks back and I was blown away by their presence and the mastery of their craft. They pulled it off with their usual eight-member lineup augmented by an additional seven especially for that occasion. That’s 14 musicians onstage total! It was bliss!

I recently spoke with their singer Émilie Pompa in anticipation of their upcoming showcase at the Mundial Festival.

It’s been three years since the release of your last record. I found your newest one Upside Down to be more lush and dreamlike. Tell me about where this concept emerged for you guys and what brought on this new sound?

Upside Down was one of the first songs that I wrote. I was at my parent's cottage with a friend who was going through a very rough time in his life. We sat down and started to play music and I decided to tell his story in this song. It was a particularly grey and foggy day. I was completely inspired by the surroundings which I think are well portrayed in Upside Down. It gave me a strong guideline to what I wanted the album to represent. It made me write about other people than myself and I started to write stories about what my friends were going through in their lives. I discovered that a lot of them were struggling in different ways and it made me realize that our path in life is not a simple straight line. There are a lot of ups and downs, there is no sweet without sour, no renewal without destruction.

Upside Down represents that critical moment of fear, doubt and anxiety that you have to embrace and accept, because you have the power to choose what the next move is going to be. So it's alright to take risks in life and be afraid. Like the burning phoenix overcoming darkness, rising to the challenge and being reborn from his ashes to become more powerful.

I was one of the lucky ones attending your album launch at Centre Phi a few weeks ago. I loved the augmented band you had on stage that night. All of us in attendance were blown away, how was that experience for you?

It was an incredible experience! To be able to share live with everyone the orchestral arrangements that we worked on for this album was wonderful. It felt so powerful and rich on stage. I felt like a rock that a tidal wave was crashing on! And again it was about taking risks because it did come with certain challenges, but it was completely worth it! I really hope we're going to get the chance to do that show again!

Speaking on being such a big group, can you give me more insight into the songwriting process and how you go about starting a song all the way to the finish line? Is it a team effort or do all songs start off with you alone?

They mainly start with me alone, except for two songs on this album where William Côté composed guitar riffs that I found interesting and decided to build songs with them. For the rest of the songs I usually start playing either a guitar, piano/synthesizer or bass line idea. Then I work around that. I try to record as many instrument parts as possible at home on my computer…. I sing the trumpet and saxophone lines to give me a good idea of the horn and wind harmonies. It's a really fun process! When the instrumental part is done, I then record some vocal melodies and try to figure out what the lyrics are going to be.

When I feel I have brought the most that I could to the song, I present it to William and we arrange it together. He has such good ideas and pushes me to think outside the box. I usually let him create his drum parts as well as the percussions.

We then bring the song to the rest of the band members and that's where the magic happens. Even though I have certain precise things written down for them to play, it is important for me to give them liberty to express themselves in their playing. Every idea they have is welcome and tried. I even leave some blank sections, with certain guidelines, and then ask them to interpret it in their own creative way. They are incredibly talented musicians. That's how our songs come to life!

Knowing that you are so many musicians involved in the creative process I’d love to know a bit more about your personal musical influences as a songwriter.

There are so many of them, but one who really inspired me as a songwriter is Andy Shauf. I was so moved by his album The bearer of bad news. The way he tells a story is so captivating.

One of the great poets of all time for me would be Tom Waits. He is such an amazing artist whose songs are so visceral and real.

Bon Iver for me is an artist who has the capacity to renew himself beautifully. He has a strong signature style that is very inspiring.

Alabama Shakes is also at the top of my list. Very powerful and soulful. They really get to me.

Lastly can you please tell me what you feed your drummer to get him to play drums AND acoustic guitar AND sing at the same time? As a musician myself, I felt a bit insecure knowing there are drummers out there doing it all.

Will is such an amazing musician! He's very curious and has a thirst for discovering new music. He is also a great musical arranger and is very interested in many musical branches such as sound engineering. Being very passionate, he is always up for challenges of multitasking. We work very closely and always produce our albums together.

On a parfois le privilège de recevoir un artiste invité. Ce mois-ci, c’était Tamara Weber-Fillion !

Tamara a connu ses premiers succès lors de son passage à l’édition française de l’émission La Voix, et débute aujourd’hui une carrière prometteuse. Chanteuse hors pair et d’une générosité incroyable, nous avons eu le plaisir de l’écouter chanter ses compositions. Vous retrouverez sa musique très prochainement dans son EP, dont la sortie est prévue au cours des prochains mois.

Tamara had her first success at the French edition of The Voice and is now starting a promising musical career. She is an outstanding singer with an incredibly generous personality. Quel est ton plus beau souvenir sur scène?

Sincèrement, j’ai eu plein de bons souvenirs sur scène au cours de ma carrière musicale, mais c’est sûr que mon audition à l’aveugle à The Voice en France était un moment magique et historique pour moi.

Vivant ou mort, avec qui aimerais-tu faire un duo?

Il est mort… donc ça n’arrivera pas! Mais mon artiste préféré est Eliott Smith. Mais si ce doit être quelqu’un de vivant, je suis une grande fan de Ed Sheeran.

Comment s’appellerait la chaîne musicale de tes rêves, celle que tu créerais de toutes pièces?

C’est une bonne question! Ça n’est pas le genre de question qui est posée en entrevue d’habitude! Je l’appellerais ‘Aquarius Records’ car j’ai comme une obsession pour l’astrologie dans la vie!

Quelle est ton actualité pour les prochaines semaines et prochains mois?

Je m’en vais en Allemagne pour différents spectacles, ça va être fun! J’ai aussi enregistré un EP dont je suis très fière. Je n’ai pas encore de date de sortie mais je vous tiendrai au courant sur mes réseaux sociaux!

What is your best memory on stage?

Honestly, I had a lot of good experiences on stage during my career, but my blind audition at The Voice in France was a magical and historical moment for me.

Dead or alive, with whom would you like to sing a duet?

He's dead ... so it won’t happen! But my favorite artist is Eliott Smith. If it must be someone alive, I'm a big fan of Ed Sheeran.

What would be the title of the musical channel of your dreams, the one you would create from scratch?

It's a good question! This is not the kind of question that is asked in a regular interview! I would call it 'Aquarius Records' because I have an obsession for astrology!

What’s coming up for you in the next weeks and months?

I'm going to Germany to perform various shows; it's going to be fun! I also recorded an EP of which I am very proud, I don’t have a release date yet but I will keep you updated on my socials!

The Zolas hail from Vancouver. With 3 albums and 1 EP recorded in less than a decade, they’ve grown a strong and dedicated fan base!

1. What genre would best describe your music?

Alt-rock/brit-pop? We try to make every album different. It’s not a rule for us it just seems to be that way. Our last record was definitely poppy with flourishing synths. The new one has much more guitar in it and sounds like something we would have worshipped growing up.

2. Can you share a random fun fact about The Zolas?

Our drummer Cody is low-key the undisputed best singer in the band.

Yukon Blonde is also from the Canadian West Coast. Their catchy melodies bring us back to the ‘80s, and we love it!

1. What genre would best describe your music?

Psychedelic lounge? That’s always a hard question.

2. Can you share a random fun fact about Yukon Blonde?

We open our bags of chips in landscape mode as opposed to portrait mode. That way you can get a good look at your chip and, you know, see what you’re working with. You also don’t need do put your hand so deep in the chip well. It’s definitely a more premium chip user experience.

3. Which #hashtag (just 1!) would you use to describe your work?

Kudos to another Canadian band! We Are The City is a trio composed of Cayne McKenzie (singer-keyboardist), Andy Huculiak (drummer), and David Menze (guitarist). We really love “Dark Horizon”, it’s just unique and beautiful. Andy Huculiak answered to our questions. ?

Experimental and explosive pop.

2. Can you share a random fun fact about We Are The City?

We've been a band for 10 years and started playing together when we were still in high school. And yet, we're still learning new things about each other.

Putting together our next album that will be released next year called RIP. Planning a special tour around that. And perhaps our most ambitious/daring music video yet.

The Ontario’s band Born Ruffians was formed in 2004 by school friends Luke Lalonde (guitar/vocals), Mitch Derosier (bass), Andy Lloyd (guitar/keyboard) and Steve Hamelin (drums). This year, the band released their 5th studio album Uncle, Duke & The Chief. Go see them on stage! They’re currently touring North America.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival | Photo Album Greg Wed, 10/10/2018

After so many years, I got to cross off one item off my bucket list last weekend in San Francisco by attending the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.

This is the 18th edition of a festival that drew over half a million people to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park to watch shows on 6 stages over 3 days. Folk, Roots, Americana, and Bluegrass are not exactly music genres one associates with crowds of that size! Past years have seen the audience swell to 750,000. It’s safe to say that California continues to be a cultural tastemaker!

The festival was founded by Warren Hellman, the late billionaire/philanthropist whose love of bluegrass and corresponding roots genres drove him to underwrite the festival as a gift to the city, rejecting all forms of commercial co-sponsorship along the way and securing it as a free event.

Folk Music Ontario's 2018 conference and Awards took place from September 27-30 in Mississauga Ontario. The event is a yearly gathering of the roots music clans not just from Ontario but from across Canada who come together for showcases and panels. Many US and European delegates participated under the Export Development Program (EDP), potentially offering performance and music release opportunities in their territories. There were also EDP one-on-one sessions where delegate artists had face-to-face meetings with visiting event and venue buyers, festival artistic directors, agents, and more.

Folk Music Ontario is a not-for-profit organization that has supported the growth and development of the folk music community and industry for the last 30 years. Today, Folk Music Ontario is the largest folk and roots music organization in Canada and serves its members as a recognized arts service organization.

Stingray Music is proud to be the annual presenter of the Stingray Rising Stars Award as part of the FMO Awards brunch, and to have the opportunity to support many up and coming artists, many of whom have later gone onto international touring and signings. Simply witness one of last year's winners, AHI, whose album is now climbing the US Americana and Folk charts.

This year, Greg Torrington, Stingray's Roots Music Programmer, presented prizes of $1,000 each to The O'Pears for their English language song " Quite Now" and to Franco-Ontarian duo Georgian Bay for its song "Roi", which they also beautifully performed acapella at the Gala Awards.

About the winners

The O’Pears

The O’Pears are a Toronto-based contemporary folk trio made up of Lydia Persaud, Jill Harris and Meg Contini, three songwriters who weave stories that stir the spirit and capture the timeless character of folk music. They recently performed to high acclaim at festivals such as Summerfolk, Great Heart Festival, Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival and have been featured live with Royal Wood, Good Lovelies, Michelle Willis, and Coco Love Alcorn. Each band member a distinctly talented musician with a stand-alone voice, style, and stage presence, when these three come together it is breathtaking. The O’Pears continue to bring a strong, honest voice to the modern female perspective.

Georgian Bay

The 2016 Polaris prize nominated bilingual duo Georgian Bay features the soaring vocal harmonies of multi-instrumentalists Joëlle Westman and Kelly Lefaive. Fearlessly fusing elements of electronic, jazz, chamber music, and pop to their folk roots, Georgian Bay’s music is uniquely Canadian, intertwining lyrics in English and French. Georgian Bay just released the second volume of “Courage”, a two-volume album which fuses elements of electronic, jazz and chamber music to their folk roots and explores the human experience in shadow and light.

I'm super excited to release my new album, Thank You for Coming, Enjoy in the next few months... La Luz

La Luz – Floating Features Album Cover

I’ve read somewhere that La Luz is known for their "surf noir" style. I just couldn’t find another way to describe their genre. The layered vocal harmonies and electrifying instrumental arrangement bring you into the groove like no other surf rock band.

A special mention goes to the "The Creature", a song that expresses dark ideas over a bright melody.

La Luz just released a third album entitled Floating features, and they are on an international tour. Catch the wave and beware of their fins, surf rockers!

Launder

The Weather Station and Jennifer Castle have recorded a pair of songs together for the third edition of the Polaris Cover Sessions, sponsored by Stingray Music.

The acts came together for a single day at Sugar Shack studio in London, Ontario this past August to record two songs — The Weather Station’s “I Tried to Wear the World (feat. Jennifer Castle)” and Jennifer Castle’s “Midas Touch (feat. The Weather Station).”

The songs will be featured exclusively on Stingray Music during the months of September and October. A video shot by Colin Medley featuring in-the-studio performance footage of The Weather Station’s “I Tried to Wear the World (feat. Jennifer Castle)” as well as an interview featuring Castle and The Weather Station’s Tamara Lindeman by Stingray Music host and Polaris juror Zachary Monson will be available on the Stingray Music YouTube channel.

“I’ve looked up to Jennifer for a long time and she’s been a songwriting and singing hero of mine for probably forever,” said The Weather Station’s Lindeman. “I just thought it would be cool to see inside of her process and her world and learn something and it’s actually been really cool because we’re more similar than I thought and I see her doing things and it all makes sense to me and I understand her music better and it’s exciting.”

“I came to the project via Tam and it seemed like just a really rare opportunity to go into the studio and have that resource provided for us,” said Castle. “So I think we both kind of jumped on it on that level. I just feel grateful for a day in the studio today and an opportunity to do something we wouldn’t be able to ‘afford’ to try.”

“Contributing to the career advancement of up-and-coming artists and their breakthrough into new markets is one of Stingray Music’s core values,” said Mathieu Péloquin, Senior Vice-President, Marketing and Communications at Stingray. “The inspiring talent of Canadian artists make them true ambassadors of our creativity. Stingray Music wishes to tangibly participate in their success. It is therefore with enthusiasm that we renew every year our commitment to the Polaris Music Prize by presenting the Collaboration Sessions.”

Jennifer Castle and The Weather Station are both two-time Polaris nominees. Castle’s Pink City made the Polaris Short List in 2015 while her Angels Of Death made the Long List this year. The Weather Station’s Loyalty album made the Long List in 2015 and the self-titled album made the Long List this year as well.

Past Polaris Collaboration Sessions include Shad and Holy Fuck coming together as Holy Shad to create The Legend Of Cy Borg EP and Buffy Sainte-Marie teaming up with Tanya Tagaq for “You Got To Run (Spirit Of The Wind).” A vinyl 7” of both songs will be given away for free during Record Store Day in Canada, April 13, 2019.

Mmm, I would say we are indie folk? Definitely not traditional folk by any means, but we do have aspects in our sound reminiscent of more “old-time” rootsy music, like The Carter Family or, one of our idols, Gillian Welch. That being said, more and more we are exploring contemporary and different styles.

We almost called ourselves Foxymoron, but we couldn’t agree upon which one of us would be the fox and which one would be the moron...

Well, we are just at the tail end of a European tour and we also plan on releasing our new, 7-song album sometime very soon. Hoping to get on an across-Canada tour this fall, go on a writing retreat up in some snowy mountains, and head back to Europe as soon as possible. Oh, and play in Brazil and Australia...or anywhere, really — we’re very open and excited for whatever may come our way. :) A show in an ice castle perhaps?
