The Stingray-sponsored 2019 CCMA Legends show at this year’s Country Music Week in Calgary at the Jack Singer Auditorium was a fantastic event. A perennial highlight during the CCMAs, The Legends Show brings together some of Canada’s legendary country artists as well as many of today’s stars. In this unique show, artists play their hits then team up to present collaborative renditions of Canadian rock classics.

Aaron Pritchett, a seasoned country star with many charting hits over the past twenty years, hosted this year’s event. Newcomer Jade Eagleson joined him for a marvelous acoustic version of The Tragically Hip’s “Wheat Kings.”

Current charting singer Andrew Hyatt paired up with Nashville-based hit singer-songwriter Deric Rattan to cover Bryan Adams’ “Cuts Like A Knife.”

Next, Canadian multi-award-winning Caroline Dawn Johnson teamed up with Tenille Townes, herself now a number one chart-topping artist and multiple winner at this year’s CCMA awards. They performed their rendition of Alanis Morisette’s “Isn’t It Ironic.”

Then came the incredible pairing-up of two family acts. The Wilkinsons joined up with brother and sister group The Reklaws to perform The Wilkinson’s 1998 international hit, “26 Cents.”

One of Canada’s biggest country stars of late is Tim Hicks who was matched up with Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea. They brought the audience to its feet with their version of Bruce Cockburn’s “Lovers in a Dangerous Time.”

Finishing off this year’s Legends show were Canadian country legend Michelle Wright with guitar-shredder sensation Lindsay Ell, whose latest songs are impacting the country charts on both sides of the border. Together they synergized a remarkable cover of “Black Velvet” for the evening’s grand finale.

Greg Torrington met up with big winner at the CCMA Awards, Tenille Townes. Tenille swept up all four categories in which she was nominated.

The Canadian Country Music Association’s (CCMA) Country Music Week kicks off in Calgary on September 5. Stingray will be on hand at all the events, including our sponsorship of the big annual CCMA Legends Show.

The beauty of Country Music Week is that music fans can participate in so many events. One of them is the annual CCMA Legends Show, always a highlight during Country Music Week. This year it’s on Friday, September 6 at the beautiful Jack Singer Concert Hall in downtown Calgary and will be supported for the first time by Stingray Music, as official presenter! The uniqueness of the Legends Show is that it brings together many of the biggest Canadian country stars of the past, matching them with some of the hottest current acts. This year’s event will see performances from Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Alan Doyle (of Great Big Sea,) Jade Eagleson, Lindsay Ell, Tim Hicks, Andrew Hyatt, Aaron Pritchett, The Reklaws, Deric Ruttan, Tenille Townes, The Wilkinsons, and Michelle Wright.

The Legends Show is only one of several happenings where the fans and the public can join in. Other opportunities for the fans to get up close and even meet and get selfies are The Fan Village on Saturday and Sunday, The CCMA Fan Fest on Saturday (all free!), and the daily Songwriters’ Series. And let’s not forget the main event – the 2019 CCMA Awards Show. It’s happening on Sunday, September 8 at the ScotiaBank Saddledome. Although it’s looking like it’s sold out, you’ll be able to catch it live on Global starting at 9:00 PM. This year’s host are Billy Ray Cyrus and Dallas Smith with live performances from Dallas as well as Old Dominion, Meghan Patrick, Paul Brandt, James Barker Band, Lindsay Ell, Dean Brody, High Valley, Brett Kissel, The Reklaws, Tim Hicks, The Washboard Union, Chad Brownlee, Terri Clark, Aaron Goodvin, Jess Moskaluke, and Gord Bamford.

Then there are the actual awards themselves! The James Barker Band and Brett Kissel lead the nominees with five each. This year marks the return, after a 30-year hiatus, of The Entertainer of Year Awards. This award is for the artist who has shown “the greatest competence in all aspects of the field.” All the nominees certainly qualify for that description! They are Paul Brandt, Dean Brody, Tim Hicks, Kissel, and Dallas Smith. Here’s where to check out the full slate of categories and all the nominees .

The 2018 CCMA (Canadian Country Music Association) Awards are now officially in the record books. The awards happened in Hamilton, Ontario over three nights, September 7 – 9. Stingray Music was there to participate in the ceremonies as a perennial sponsor of the CCMA under our Stingray Rising Stars program.

The Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) is a membership-based, not-for-profit organization committed to the promotion and recognition of Canadian country music. Built upon the foundation to educate, elevate and celebrate Canadian talent, the CCMA progressively heralds the spirit, community and creativity that country music fosters.

This year we were honoured to present the prestigious, Video of the Year Award at the Saturday evening CCMA Gala Dinner & Awards on September 8 in the beautiful Chedoke Room at the Hamilton Convention Center.

This year’s Video of the Year nominees were:

- "The Bad Guy," Meghan Patrick

- "Drive Me Away," Jess Moskaluke

- "Hometown Kids," The Reklaws

- "Sky Stays This Blue," Dallas Smith

- "We Were That Song," Brett Kissel

It was Stingray Music’s Country Music programmer, Greg Torrington who had the pleasure to announce multiple nominee Dallas Smith as the Video of The Year Award winner for his song “Sky Stays This Blue”. Dallas also took home the esteemed Male Artist of the Year Award for the very first time!

Country music took over Hamilton, Ontario from September 7-9, 2018 to celebrate the best in Canadian Country Music. Canadian country singer-songwriter and pianist Nicole Rayy brings us an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the 2018 Canadian Country Music Awards.

Saturday evening was a night of glamour as country music community dressed up in its best to celebrate those who make country music great.

The night honoured both artists and industry professionals with the highlight of the evening being Terri Clark’s induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. Her acceptance speech was truly moving. Terri spoke of her late mother and how much she had helped her in her career. She also talked about the great gift we have as artists of being able to bring people together. Terri’s speech and induction, as well as the induction of Jackie Rae Greening, were just the start of many moments this weekend that highlighted women’s empowerment in country music.

Female Power

Female power started the Canadian Country Music Awards off with a bang on Sunday night at FirstOntario Centre. Jess Moskaluke, Kira Isabella and Madeline Merlo paid tribute to the Queen of Canadian country music, Shania Twain, and demonstrated how the talent of females in country music is better than ever.

The queen herself, Shania Twain, who was the host of the evening, then joined the talented women of today’s country on stage. Twain took home four awards including, Top Selling Album of the Year, Top Selling Canadian Album of the Year, the CCMA Generation Award and the coveted Apple Music Fan’s Choice Award. She took several moments throughout the night to celebrate the progress that women are making in country music, but she also recognized the need for more progress in the future:

"I'm thrilled to see women in country dominating the album of the year category," said Twain, pointing how rare it is to see this many women nominated in the category. But we can go further by recognizing a place for diversity in country music by being inclusive and by really respecting what women of country have always been able to deliver: heart, soul and a kick-ass guitar riff."

The female talent and focus of the night didn’t end there as the crowd of over 10,000 fans enjoyed performances from Jessica Mitchell, Lindsay Ell and Meghan Patrick. Meghan who took home the award for Female Artist of the Year said: “To all the girls: we are killing it this year”. Jess Moskaluke then picked up the award for Album of the year for Past the Past.

Future Fan Favourites

Of course, fans were also lucky enough to hear from some of the best males in country music on Sunday night. The Washboard Union, who took home the award for Group or Duo of the Year, filled the room with their harmonies and James Barker Band, who picked up the award for Single of the Year for Chills, lit up the night. Dallas Smith who won Male Artist of the Year performed his hit song with Terri Clark One Drink Ago. And of course who could forget a special guest performance from superstar Keith Urban!
