The conference was the most successful edition yet. Over 1300 professionals represented 45 countries at this year’s edition.

As a proud partner of this conference, Stingray Classica had a beautiful booth at the event to present the Classica app and television channel. Stingray’s Artistic Director, Rob Overman, gave a riveting keynote on ‘Streaming Video and Classical Music’. He talked about streaming as a big opportunity for classical music, and how artists, orchestras, venues, and other classical music companies can benefit from video streaming services such as the Classica app.

Over the course of the conference, there were many meetings and discussions on the future of classical music, as well as interesting presentations that explored the topic. Besides all the talking, the most important part was, of course, the music!

Klangmalerei.tv and Stingray recorded many of the daily showcases. Artists from all over the world performed classical music in innovative and creative ways. They pushed the boundaries of classical music and extended the horizons of art in music. For some ensembles, it was the first time that they performed in the Netherlands or as big a conference as Classical:NEXT.

Thursday afternoon started with Ensemble Hope from France. They explored new forms of contemporary music by using technology to present little-know instruments. One of the instruments was the Euphone, which looked very impressive. The ensemble doesn’t only make music, but also gives masterclasses, presentations, and workshops to involve people and explain their vision on the future of classical music and the instruments they use.

We already mentioned the Asko | Schönberg Ensemble in our Artists to Watch article, and it was indeed worth the watch! With the help of a speaker, they explained their way of producing new classical music with video technology that accompanies the music. They played a new piece by the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen. He is turning 80 in June and continues to contribute to the future of classical music.

Other inspiring acts, such as Gaybird, The Hermes Experiment and Kathleen Tagg & Andre Petersen assembled a big audience during their performance. You can watch these and all other performances on Stingray Classica soon. These stars of classical music get a lot of attention all over the world. They play in the biggest concerts halls and are the headliners of classical music festivals. But how does one become a classical music icon? What does it take to get to the top? And by giving the younger generation a bigger stage, will this also attract a younger audience? The younger classical generation presents Young Euro Classic!

Young Euro Classic was founded in 2000 in Berlin, Germany, to bring younger musicians together in orchestras. This way, the younger generation could meet and share their knowledge. Young Euro Classic is a 17-day summer course, but also an important platform for European classical music traditions and heritage. The young generation is the key to innovate and keep this tradition alive. During the summer, orchestras all over the world perform at the Konzerthaus Berlin. Their program consists of world-famous classical music works to local, unknown compositions.

During the concerts, the orchestras are accompanied by renowned soloists and led by great conductors. This event is one of the most important events of the year for these young musicians. A lot of orchestras are made up of youngsters from one country, but there are also mixed orchestras that break with the country boundaries. One of them is the Asian Youth Orchestra.

Conductor and artistic director of the orchestra, Richard Pontzious initially founded the Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) with violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, in 1987. Pontzious aimed to create a platform for young Asian musicians to unite musical talent within the continent and encourage a new generation of homegrown talented individuals. Today, the AYO is considered Asia’s premier pre-professional orchestra, having received awards such as the 2010 Praemium Imperiale Grant for Young Artists, in 2010.

You can now enjoy the Asian youth orchestra on Stingray Classica with other performances from the Young Euro Classic festival. From June 14 to 16 we dedicate our weekend to young classical musicians. Enjoy beautiful masterpieces such as Mahler – Symphony No. 1 and Tchaikovsky – Piano Concerto No. 1.

For more information about the programs and the full schedule visit www.stingrayclassica.com.

Stay on the pulse of the most recent news in music. Many of the beautiful Passions that were written and composed for this time of the year are performed all over the world. One Easter tradition started at the beginning of the 17th century in Leipzig. Now, it has become a big tradition for classical music fans and enthusiasts. Stingray showcases these beautiful compositions on different platforms and services.

In the beginning of the 17th century, there was a small Passion tradition during the Holy week started by an earlier Thomas-cantor. Choral Passions were sung regularly in the churches in Leipzig. The first concertante Passion in Leipzig is, according to many writers, the Brockes Passion by Georg Philipp Telemann. This almost three-hour Passion was performed in 1717 by Johann Gotfried Vogler, the former organist and director musicales of the Neukirche. By that time, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), born in Eisenach, started his new job as ‘Capellmeister,’ in Kötchen.

Bach started his Passion performance in 1724, putting his stamp on the Good Friday Vespers service with the ‘St. John Passion,’ one of the older surviving Passions by Bach. Over the years, Bach altered his Passions regularly. His St. John Passion underwent multiple rounds of changes and improvements that resulted in four versions. The Passion, according to St. Matthew, BWV 244, was presented at St. Thomas’ in Leipzig, on Good Friday, 1727. It was a work of extraordinary musical dimensions but was forgotten after Bach died, in 1750.

One composer that helped Bach make history was Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. In 1829, he performed the, at that time partly forgotten, St. Matthew Passion in Berlin. The chorales that were still performed during the end of the 18th century inspired Mendelssohn to perform the Passion as one big masterpiece again. Other works by Bach, besides the St. Matthew Passion, started being regularly performed. Music by Viennese composers such as Mozart, Haydn, and romantic composers such as Mendelssohn and Schumann, had bigger status and was performed more frequently in Europe.

The Netherlands fulfilled a very big role in the return of the St. Matthew Passion in the churches and concert halls. This started in the 19th century when Johannes Verhulst promoted the oeuvre of Bach with the German ‘Bach Gesellschaft.’ There was a lot of attention for the Netherlands’ first performance of the St. Matthew Passion in 1870, in Rotterdam. Not only during the official performance, but also the rehearsals, were visited by hundreds of visitors. But it was Willem Mengelberg who started a yearly tradition of the St. Matthew Passion, on Palm Sunday, in Amsterdam.

Mengelberg combined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra with the Amsterdam Toonkunstkoor and conducted the Passion himself. Between 1899 and 1919, he led 45 performances, not only in the Netherlands, but also in Frankfurt, Brussels, and Paris. The Netherlands’ Bach Society was at first against the popularity of the St. Matthew Passion. The society was afraid that the performances of the Passion would not be authentic but spreading Bach’s music was one of its goals. Starting in 1922, the Netherlands Bach Society also started to organize an, almost yearly, performance of the St. Matthew Passion.

The discussion between the authenticity of the Passion kept going during the years to come. Instead of seeing this as a negative, in the Netherlands there was place for interpretations, different opinions and a Passion for everybody. After the Mengelberg years around 1950, the St. Matthew Passion was officially a Dutch tradition. The movement, led by Gustav Leonhardt, inspired by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and included Ton Koopman and Philippe Herreweghe, was searching for a true historic performance. It reached its goal in 1983 when a new baroque orchestra was born: a small choir with musicians specialized in Baroque music and an orchestra that played historic instruments. This performance was highly valued, but there was still room for other interpretations.

Today a lot of unique recordings of this Easter Passion exist, each with its own beauty and particularities. Around Good Friday and Easter you can listen to, and watch, many Passions at Stingray. Stingray Brava and Stingray Classica present two versions of the St. John Passion and one Brockes-Passion. In addition, there are two beautiful Easter Concerts from 2015 and 2016 in Baden-Baden Germany. The Berliner Philharmoniker plays with star soloists Isabelle Faust and Yo-Yo Ma. Listening to the Passions is also possible via Stingray Music. The special Baroque channel has many of Bach’s masterpieces, and the vibe ‘Good Friday Hymns’ is full of great classical music for Easter.

Stay on the pulse of the most recent news in music.

Facebook - Twitter - Instagram

Classical

baroque

classique

Festival

Stingray Brava

Stingray Classica

Stingray Concerts

Stingray DJAZZ

Stingray Music

Discover

North America

French

Show in Listen

Off
