The legendary musician was one of the most multi-faceted figures of 20th-century classical music. Not only did he compose beautiful classical music that had a significant impact on the film and music industries, but he was also a charismatic conductor, making him one of the most successful musicians in American history.

Bernstein, born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, was interested in the piano at a very young age. As a child, he took piano lessons and later, during his time at Harvard University, began to write and conduct musical scores. This period was a crucial one with regard to his future career. At Harvard University, he met American composer Aaron Copland whose music he enjoyed playing very much. He also met conductor Dimitri Mitropolous whose charisma and power had a major influence on Bernstein’s decision to go to the Curtis Institute of Music and never give up conducting.

After he left Curtis, Bernstein did a lot of guest conducting, summer schools, and made his first overseas appearances as a conductor. It is during this period that he emerged as a composer. One of the early highlights of his career is his work with the Young People’s Concerts. This preexisting series of classical music concerts for a family audience was brought to a new level by Bernstein in 1958 with the New York Philharmonic. He conducted a total of 53 performances, and he inspired generations of musicians and music-lovers all over the world. Every performance had its own topic and Bernstein, who already worked as a lecturer at that time, made the series a pleasure to watch.

The second highlight worth noting is the operetta Candide that premiered in 1956. The story is based on Voltaire’s novella of the same name. The first run of performances on Broadway was not an enormous success, but this piece is now one of the signature works of Bernstein and librettist Lillian Hellman. The overture to Candide, the instrumental opening, soon earned a place in the orchestral repertoire. One of the reasons for its timelessness is the performances of this overture that Bernstein himself did with the New York Philharmonic.

During the same period, Bernstein was already working on the music of one of the most famous films and musicals of all time West Side Story. The story, set in New York City’s Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City was written by Arthur Laurents and inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Tony, a former member of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Riff, the Shark’s leader. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social issues marked a turning point in American musical theatre. This is why the original broadcast production of 1957 was nominated for six Tony Awards.

In 1961, Robert Wise directed the film production of West Side Story starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, and Russ Tamblyn. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and is still be regarded as one of the best movies of all time. The score to West Side Story contains major hits such as “Maria”, “Somewhere, America”, “Tonight”, “I Feel Pretty”, and “One Hand, One Heart”. That same year, Bernstein prepared an orchestral suite of highlights from the musical titled Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. This orchestral suite also has a big place in the orchestral repertoire and is very popular all over the world.

Bernstein died in his apartment a few years after announcing his retirement in 1990. He left us an enormous repertoire, and many recordings; not CDs, but also films on that are available on DVD or for broadcast. Stingray curated a selection of Bernstein’s works to celebrate the great American composer and conductor. Recordings are always available on the classical Stingray Music channels. It’s a sunny Sunday morning in Detroit, Michigan, near the Canadian border. To be precise, we are at New Bethel Baptist Church on Linwood Street. It’s a warm day, and, as always, the church of Clarence LaVaughn Franklin is crowded with smiling faces in the mood for swingin’ hips accompanied by familiar Christian gospel, dancing, singing, and hand-flapping to get some “fresh” air. Of course, everyone is wearing their Sunday best.

After the explosion during the gospel hymn “Amazing Grace”, a young Aretha Franklin tries something different, something new, hallelujah! Freshly signed by Columbia records, she performs her first single “Won’t Be Long” in her father’s church, and everybody loves it.

Writing the title of this fantastic song is bittersweet; Aretha Franklin, one of the most memorable singers in history, has sadly passed away. It’s almost ironic to be speaking about the same church where, in December 1963, Aretha gave a stunning tribute to her idol Dinah Washington (whose funeral was conducted by Father Franklin), and realize this might be the same place where family and friends will say goodbye to their beloved Aretha, our Aretha Franklin, our Queen of Soul.

Unfortunately, Franklin was no stranger to health problems, she dealt with serious weight issues, alcoholism, and cancer, but she always stayed on the bright side of life. Her secret? Aretha was music, her focus was intense, Aretha was soul.

I can’t remember a musician who was as pure and honest in music as Aretha was. Although I never got the chance to see her live, I consider myself a fan. Reggae had Bob Marley, pop had Michael Jackson, and soul had this beautiful woman. The fact that Aretha hated flying made it difficult for her to perform in Europe, but those who had the chance to see her during her European tours in 1968 and 1977 Europe tours consider themselves blessed.

Hopefully, all North Americans have been to one of her concerts because our charming queen absolutely loved performing. Franklin was never too proud, she never backed down, at least as long the challenge didn’t include a flight. She was the first gospel singer with a major record hit, “Spirit in the Dark” (1970), received the American Presidential Medal of Freedom (2005), sang at Barack Obama’s inauguration (2009 – don’t forget her hat), gave an amazing tribute to 46 year younger Adele (2014), performed multiple times at the Super Bowl, and, above all, she won over millions and millions of hearts and minds.

Maybe in 50 years, our children’s children will ask how Aretha earned the title Queen of Soul. Our answer should be unanimous and clear: Aretha didn’t earn this honor, it was always hers. With her stunning voice, she was the personification of soul, the founding mother of soul. We say a little prayer for you, Aretha.

Jazz

Soul

Tribute

Stingray Classica

Stingray DJAZZ

Stingray iConcerts

Stingray Music

Stingray Retro

Feature

Worldwide

English

Show in Listen

Off

Pride Essentials by Barbada de Barbades

Site web officiel: Barbada.ca

Restez à l'affût des dernières nouvelles musicales. There is no one-size-fits-all here. While you may have heard these songs before, you are certain to enjoy discovering a different vocal take on your favorites. You're also likely to hear a few songs and voices you've never heard before. The Contemporary Vocal Jazz Channel on Stingray Music celebrates jazz vocalists from around the world, who are active in today's jazz scene.

Vocalists include:

Bobby McFerrin

"Don't Worry Be Happy" may be the song that he is most well known for, but Bobby McFerrin has given the world of vocal jazz a distinguished legacy of vocal music. Whether singing solo, in a duet or jazz ensemble, or with his Voicestra vocal ensemble, McFerrin is a delight to listen to and watch perform. He surprises us with every vocal expression that he creates and moves us with every beat that he taps or claps out. A true master of vocal music, he continues to tour, generously offering us pure, authentic, playful, improvised musical performances.

Sheila Jordan

Sheila Jordan started singing in the 40s and is still going strong today. Influenced by instrumentalists, Jordan fell under the musical bebop spell of Charlie Parker, absorbing everything he could teach her. Known by musicians as a singer with good ears, Jordan phrases lyrics, bends and scoops notes, sings rhythms as a musician, all with the vocal dexterity of a master.

Jordan has played with the who's who of jazz history: Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Steve Kuhn, Steve Swallow, Cameron Brown and many more. With more than 20 albums to her name, she's also sat in on multiple recordings for other jazz legends like George Russell and Carla Bley.

Sheila Jordan, who turns 90 in November, continues to perform and to share her knowledge by teaching and inspiring jazz singers around the world, with the playfulness and exuberance of a child.

Kurt Elling

He scats, he swings, he sings: Kurt Elling does, year after year, performing more than 200 gigs a year to audiences around the world. His beautiful, resonant voice has adorned 13 albums, earned him 12 Grammy nominations, with one Grammy win for Best Jazz Vocal Album "Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sing The Music of Coltrane and Hartman". Whether he's singing a standard, pop or folk song, he owns and commands the song, playing it his way and making it new again. Offering his suave caring voice, rhythmic sensitivity and dynamics, the debonair Elling finds a way to personally express the song's meaning, with such an apparent ease. Kurt Elling is the quintessential jazz singer.

Cecile McLorin Salvant

First prize winner of the 2010 Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition, Cecile McLorin Salvant lept into the jazz scene without hesitation, releasing 3 albums within 5 years. "Woman Child", was nominated for Best Vocal Jazz Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards, while her 3rd and 4th albums, "For One To Love" and "Dreams and Daggers" both won the Grammy Award for Best Vocal Jazz Album, in 2016 and 2018 respectively. That's two Grammy Awards before the age of 30, and very much merited. With her astute attention to the lyric, careful choice of phrasing and melodic embellishment, she plays the songs in true storyteller fashion, captivating and entertaining us with every note and word she sings.

Jacob Collier

The 23-year-old British singer Jacob Collier arrived on the jazz scene in true 21st-century style: via YouTube videos that went viral. Collier's sense of harmony and rhythm are out of this world. His debut album, entitled, "In My Room", was made completely by Collier: he recorded it, he arranged it, he performed all of the vocals and instrumentation, in his room. His arrangements of "Flintstones" and "You And I" from the album won him two Grammys: Best Arrangement: Instruments and Vocals ("Flintstones") and Best Arrangement: Instruments or A Cappella ("You And I"). His musical talent is not restricted to his room, he performs live, alone on stage with his multiple instruments and vocal looping machines that he controls jumping from one to another to keep the song going, all while maintaining harmonic and rhythmic perfection. Nothing short of amazing to listen to and behold. His future is bright.

These are only 5 of many wonderful vocalists with songs included in the Contemporary Jazz Vocal Jazz Channel. Sandy Duperval is a passionate DJ, vocalist, and record producer, trying to change the world, one beat, one melody, one song, and one dance at a time.

How has your music evolved over the years?

It's been quite a journey with an unexpected turn of events. I started as a Gospel singer struggling with being Queer and thinking I didn't fit anywhere. When I decided to pursue a career in music, people would tell me not to because they thought musicians only played in the subway. With my grandmother's and mother's support, I pushed through. Going to music school connected me to DJing but never in my crazy mind did I dream that it would lead to becoming a professional DJ who simultaneously sings while spinning records. As they say, everything happens for a reason, so I roll with the punches and trust my purpose.

How do you keep your sound relevant after all these years?

I travel and listen to as many different DJs and radio shows as I can. I've always been a firm believer in mixing different genres and eras together. The past influences the present and in the future, the present comes the past. I believe it's important to be as cultured and open-minded as possible to remain creative, interesting, and relevant.

Thanks again for collaborating with us! What does your Stingray Music channel aim to say? What do you want your listeners to feel?

Thank you for the opportunity. I selected artists that have some of the best music out there but unfortunately, are not necessarily getting the platform and exposure they deserve. Showcasing the quality of music that is being produced by self-identified LGBTQ+ is crucial to me. A lot of the material I selected is music inspired by personal experiences involving homophobia and bullying. Growing up and struggling with my own sexuality, music was my escape but I longed to find artists that I felt I could identify with, back then there really wasn't. Coming out seemed like an impossible journey, every artist who would attempt to do so would see their career fall apart. I hope this list inspires and helps fight some of the prejudice.

What PRIDE memory from your life stands out to you stronger than any other?

Being one of the ambassadors of the first Pride Canada in Montreal, last year. I grew up in a very religious and homophobic environment and it took me over 15 years to come to terms with my sexuality, self-love and self-worth. Knowing that I was finally in a position to help others and represent a community I am so proud to be a part of, made this one of my biggest accomplishments and by far my fondest pride memory.

What have you done in your career that you’re most proud of?

In one word, EMANCIPATION. Everything I’ve experienced I’ve finally put in my music. Freeing my mind, my heart and my soul have enabled me to travel the world and constantly reach a new audience. I’ve been DJing for some of the biggest LGBTQ+ events across Canada and abroad. I’ve also opened up for acts such as Bob Sinclar, Lil Jon, Travis Scott, Ultra Nate, Brandy, Mya and been on tour with Natalie Larose. I am proud of my ability to live freely and let my love for music and art guide my journey.

You’re a DJ, vocalist, producer, singer, and you were a finalist on Star Académie in 2004 … Is there anything you don’t do?! What are your goals for the next ten years?

Lol! There is so much I haven’t done yet, that I am working on at the moment. I’m finishing my culinary management degree to pursue my career as a Chef in parallel to my music. My grandmother was a Chef and she loved music but couldn’t sing to save her life lol. I want my life to honor hers because she enabled me to become the artist that I am. Everything I do in my career and in my life is done to keep her legacy alive.

What’s your favorite picture of yourself? Can you walk us through/describe that captured moment?

Another good one! I did a candid photo shoot with Kadeem Ellis, a Toronto Based photographer, about 2 years ago. There is one particular shot in front of a pink wall, where I was looking away smiling. I remember that moment because, it felt like after almost dying in 2009, losing my mother in 2012 and my grandmother in 2014, I was finally at a peaceful, hopeful and joyful place in my life. I had finally realized how much power there was in letting go of the pain, holding on to the great memories of unconditional love and knowing that everything has a reason to be, including me. I am here, I am queer, I am free, I serve a purpose and I am ready.

Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.

I’m working on it but I would love to be compared to Calvin Harris as a producer, to Imaani as a vocalist and Roger Sanchez as a DJ.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Learn, learn, learn because there is growth in every experience, good or bad. It’s like a video game, every stage has tools that help you complete the next stage of your life.

RuPaul said it best: if you can’t love yourself how in the hell you gonna love somebody else? What does this quote mean to you? And how have you managed to keep your head up all these years?

So true! In French, my grandmother would always say: “La charité, comme toute chose bien ordonnée, commence par soi-même.” Which means: Charity, like anything well organized, starts within. For example, if it’s crucial to wear your own oxygen mask before helping anyone else in case of emergency on a plane, why should it be different in life? You have to go out there and get as many tools as you can to enable yourself first before being able to help anyone else. Besides, If you don’t love yourself, how do you know what others should love about you? Self-love can’t be given to you and once you love yourself, it can’t be taken away.

Make sure to crank up the volume to Sandy Duperval's eclectic channel on Stingray Music!

Pride Essentials by Sandy Duperval

Twitter: @SandyDuperval Instagram: @sandyduperval Facebook: /sandydupervalofficial

Stay on the pulse of the most recent news in music. Things can easily get out of hand. Follow these tips to ensure that everyone has a good karaoke time.

It’s all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Remember that karaoke is for fun. It’s not a competition. You are not a superstar singing in front of a stadium full of adoring fans. There’s no reason to get upset if you don’t sing well, or if someone sings “your” song or you’re not called to sing as quickly as you would like.

Eagerness is cool, but don’t jump in on someone else’s song, unless they invite you to sing with them.

Share the mic. Sure, if no one else is singing, you might request to sing more than one song, but don’t hog the microphone.

Politeness will get you everywhere. Be nice to the Karaoke Jockey! They’re the ones running the show. Let them do their thing and list the songs and singers in the order they think best. They’re pros, they know what they’re doing. Be nice to the other singers: if you support them, they’ll support you. Applaud enthusiastically and loudly. Do not boo. Ever.

Equipment is not cheap. Don’t abuse it. Don’t swing the mic around your head or anywhere else. Don’t be gross: someone will be singing into the mic right after you. Pay attention to where the monitors and speakers are located. Don’t treat them as furniture. The China Store rule may apply, if you break it you may need to pay for it.

Choose your songs wisely and think about the audience you’re singing to. Songs that go over 10 minutes may not be the best choice. Songs with long musical breaks can be a bit awkward unless you’re a good dancer. Songs that are more adult-oriented may not be the best choice at an event where there are children.

Take it all in stride. No matter what happens, how well you or others sing, remember it’s about enjoying each other’s company and having fun.

You're now ready to get the karaoke party started with a selection of 14,000 songs!

Visit the karaoke store or download the all-new Stingray Karaoke mobile app for iOS.

Stay on the pulse of the most recent news in music. You might not think a “How to” guide to singing karaoke is necessary, especially if you’re not much of a karaoke fan. But even those who don’t actively seek karaoke can often get roped into it!

You’ll be better off making the experience as painless (read: embarrassing train wreck-free) as possible. Here are some basic tips you might not have thought of to make your karaoke experience much more enjoyable for both you…and your audience.

1. Song Choice

Choose a song that you know and that is easily in your voice range. Singing a song that you know really well will make it easier for you to give your best performance on stage. You can practice songs online at home or by singing along with the original recording.

If you’re singing at a karaoke bar or party, singing an up-tempo song rather than a ballad will keep the crowd in a party mood (singing a ballad can clear a room.) “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks is a good song in a mid-range that almost everyone can sing easily.

Choose a song that’s under 3 or 4 minutes – unless you’re a pro and really know the song well. Singing for more than 3 or 4 minutes on stage will seem like a really, really long time. Although it might seem like a good song choice, “Hey Jude” by the Beatles, is over 7 minutes long. It would be best to sing it online rather than on stage!

2. Bust a move!

No matter how well you move, entertaining the audience with your dance moves is part of the fun, particularly during musical breaks (if you’re not comfortable dancing by yourself on stage, you might want to make sure that the song you choose does not have long musical breaks).

Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana (At The Copa)” is a great song choice, but be prepared to dance around the stage for almost 2 minutes in the middle of the song. Don’t be discouraged from singing songs with musical breaks, just be prepared to do something during them.

3. Look out at the crowd and smile

Not only will you have more fun if you know the lyrics really well and don’t have to rely on the screen, the audience will enjoy your performance much more if you’re moving around the stage and at least sometimes looking out into the crowd and smiling. Any audience participation will increase the amount of applause you receive at the end of your performance.

It’s a win-win situation, the audience will enjoy your song more and so will you! Singing karaoke is all about having fun.

4. Go with friends and perform a duet

If it’s your first time and you don’t know a song really well, or you feel too nervous, you don’t have to sing karaoke alone. Find a friend and sing together, or get a group of people and go on stage to shout it out! A good song choice for multiple voices, that’s danceable and a lot of fun to sing and to perform is Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration”

5. Share the mic

After you’ve sung your song and basked in the applause, hand the mic back to the KJ and let someone else have their moment on stage. While you’re not on stage, sit back and enjoy other karaoke performances and encourage others by listening to their performances and applauding. When it’s your turn you’ll get back what you give.

However and wherever you sing karaoke, remember to have fun. You’re only as good (or bad) as your last performance and unless you’re recording songs and publishing them online, chances are that you’ll be the only one to remember your performance.

Ready to throw a karaoke party or want to practice solo? The Stingray Karaoke mobile app has you covered!

The full song catalog consists of more than 13,000* licensed karaoke songs in many genres, eras, and languages.
