Saturday, August 25 marks the centenary of Leonard Bernstein, the famous American conductor, composer and pianist. The legendary musician was one of the most multi-faceted figures of 20th-century classical music. Not only did he compose beautiful classical music that had a significant impact on the film and music industries, but he was also a charismatic conductor, making him one of the most successful musicians in American history.

Bernstein, born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, was interested in the piano at a very young age. As a child, he took piano lessons and later, during his time at Harvard University, began to write and conduct musical scores. This period was a crucial one with regard to his future career. At Harvard University, he met American composer Aaron Copland whose music he enjoyed playing very much. He also met conductor Dimitri Mitropolous whose charisma and power had a major influence on Bernstein’s decision to go to the Curtis Institute of Music and never give up conducting.

After he left Curtis, Bernstein did a lot of guest conducting, summer schools, and made his first overseas appearances as a conductor. It is during this period that he emerged as a composer. One of the early highlights of his career is his work with the Young People’s Concerts. This preexisting series of classical music concerts for a family audience was brought to a new level by Bernstein in 1958 with the New York Philharmonic. He conducted a total of 53 performances, and he inspired generations of musicians and music-lovers all over the world. Every performance had its own topic and Bernstein, who already worked as a lecturer at that time, made the series a pleasure to watch.

The second highlight worth noting is the operetta Candide that premiered in 1956. The story is based on Voltaire’s novella of the same name. The first run of performances on Broadway was not an enormous success, but this piece is now one of the signature works of Bernstein and librettist Lillian Hellman. The overture to Candide, the instrumental opening, soon earned a place in the orchestral repertoire. One of the reasons for its timelessness is the performances of this overture that Bernstein himself did with the New York Philharmonic.

During the same period, Bernstein was already working on the music of one of the most famous films and musicals of all time West Side Story. The story, set in New York City’s Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City was written by Arthur Laurents and inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Tony, a former member of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Riff, the Shark’s leader. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social issues marked a turning point in American musical theatre. This is why the original broadcast production of 1957 was nominated for six Tony Awards.

In 1961, Robert Wise directed the film production of West Side Story starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, and Russ Tamblyn. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and is still be regarded as one of the best movies of all time. The score to West Side Story contains major hits such as “Maria”, “Somewhere, America”, “Tonight”, “I Feel Pretty”, and “One Hand, One Heart”. That same year, Bernstein prepared an orchestral suite of highlights from the musical titled Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. This orchestral suite also has a big place in the orchestral repertoire and is very popular all over the world.

Bernstein died in his apartment a few years after announcing his retirement in 1990. He left us an enormous repertoire, and many recordings; not CDs, but also films on that are available on DVD or for broadcast. Let’s head back to the sixties. It’s a sunny Sunday morning in Detroit, Michigan, near the Canadian border. To be precise, we are at New Bethel Baptist Church on Linwood Street. It’s a warm day, and, as always, the church of Clarence LaVaughn Franklin is crowded with smiling faces in the mood for swingin’ hips accompanied by familiar Christian gospel, dancing, singing, and hand-flapping to get some “fresh” air. Of course, everyone is wearing their Sunday best.

After the explosion during the gospel hymn “Amazing Grace”, a young Aretha Franklin tries something different, something new, hallelujah! Freshly signed by Columbia records, she performs her first single “Won’t Be Long” in her father’s church, and everybody loves it.

Writing the title of this fantastic song is bittersweet; Aretha Franklin, one of the most memorable singers in history, has sadly passed away. It’s almost ironic to be speaking about the same church where, in December 1963, Aretha gave a stunning tribute to her idol Dinah Washington (whose funeral was conducted by Father Franklin), and realize this might be the same place where family and friends will say goodbye to their beloved Aretha, our Aretha Franklin, our Queen of Soul.

Unfortunately, Franklin was no stranger to health problems, she dealt with serious weight issues, alcoholism, and cancer, but she always stayed on the bright side of life. Her secret? Aretha was music, her focus was intense, Aretha was soul.

I can’t remember a musician who was as pure and honest in music as Aretha was. Although I never got the chance to see her live, I consider myself a fan. Reggae had Bob Marley, pop had Michael Jackson, and soul had this beautiful woman. The fact that Aretha hated flying made it difficult for her to perform in Europe, but those who had the chance to see her during her European tours in 1968 and 1977 Europe tours consider themselves blessed.

Hopefully, all North Americans have been to one of her concerts because our charming queen absolutely loved performing. Franklin was never too proud, she never backed down, at least as long the challenge didn’t include a flight. She was the first gospel singer with a major record hit, “Spirit in the Dark” (1970), received the American Presidential Medal of Freedom (2005), sang at Barack Obama’s inauguration (2009 – don’t forget her hat), gave an amazing tribute to 46 year younger Adele (2014), performed multiple times at the Super Bowl, and, above all, she won over millions and millions of hearts and minds.

Maybe in 50 years, our children’s children will ask how Aretha earned the title Queen of Soul. Our answer should be unanimous and clear: Aretha didn’t earn this honor, it was always hers. With her stunning voice, she was the personification of soul, the founding mother of soul. We say a little prayer for you, Aretha.

Qui est Barbada? Qui est Sébastien?

Sébastien est un gars sympathique, enjoué, positif et engagé dans un million de projets différents (dont certains incluent Barbada, évidemment). C’est aussi un gars qui aime s’informer, s’instruire et discuter d’enjeux de société (politiques, environnementaux, sociaux, etc.). Ce n’est donc pas surprenant que Barbada ait aussi ces traits de personnalité et ces intérêts, mais en y ajoutant une (grosse) touche de follie.

Barbada est une Drag Queen dynamique, drôle et surprenante. Elle excelle dans les styles disco, pop et dance, en passant par l’humour et les grands classiques des années 90. Son animation est hilarante et toujours bien adaptée au public présent, que ce soit dans les bars, les mariages et les grands festivals extérieurs.

Comment est née Barbada de Barbades?

Barbada est « née » le 5 février 2005, à l’issue du « Star Search », un concours de Drag Queen organisé au Cabaret Mado. Dès lors, sa carrière commence à se développer. Le même été, elle offre une performance lors de la fête Arc-en-Ciel de Québec. À l’automne, elle participe à une nouvelle édition du « Star Search ». Cette fois-ci, elle se rend jusqu’en finale, et remporte le concours en décembre. Elle se produit dans de plus en plus d’endroits à Montréal, bien que son fief demeure le Cabaret Mado.

Merci de collaborer avec Stingray Musique et de créer ta propre chaîne! Parle-nous de tes goûts musicaux et de ce qui t’inspire le plus.

En fait, mes intérêts musicaux varient grandement en fonction du moment de la journée ou de l’activité que je fais.

D’une part, j’adore la musique de film. Je l’aborde souvent avec mes élèves et je fais de nombreuses activités musicales sur la musique au cinéma et l’importance de celle-ci. J’admire la musique des compositeurs plus connus comme John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, etc. Ces temps-ci, j’ai un sérieux faible pour les musiques de films de superhéros (DC Comics, Marvel, etc.).

D’autre part, quand j’ai besoin d’énergie ou que je me prépare pour des spectacles, ma playlist se compose principalement de musique dance, pop, et des classiques (ou parfois des remix) des années 90.

Tu travailles dans une école primaire comme enseignant de musique et syndicaliste. Comment tes élèves et leurs parents ont réagi en te voyant dans le documentaire Ils de jour/Elles de nuit diffusé sur Artv en 2017? Est-ce qu'on est plus ouvert d'esprit qu'on le pense?

Je m’attendais à avoir plusieurs réactions diverses suite au documentaire (certaines positives, d’autres négatives). À ma grande surprise, j’en ai reçues moins que prévu dans mon milieu de travail. Plusieurs collègues enseignantes m’ont dit qu’elles ont regardé le documentaire, et quelques élèves aussi (une dizaine, tout au plus). La directrice m’a aussi témoigné de son ouverture et de son support inconditionnel, dans l’éventualité de réactions négatives de la part de parents ou d’élèves. Réactions qui ne sont jamais venues puisque tous les ‘feedbacks' que j’ai reçus furent positifs. Je suis particulièrement heureux de constater l’évolution des mentalités et l’ouverture d’esprit de la population québécoise. Certes, il y a encore du chemin à faire dans bien des milieux, mais les situations que j’ai vécues suite à ce documentaire m’ont énormément encouragée.

Es-tu surpris de là où tu es rendu dans le monde de la Drag?

Chaque nouvelle opportunité que m’amène ce passionnant métier me surprend. Je suis tellement étonnée de voir la diversité des contrats et des occasions qui se sont présentées à moi au cours de 13 dernières années. JAMAIS je n’aurais imaginé un jour être DJ pour des évènements du Cirque du Soleil. JAMAIS je n’aurais imaginé animer des spectacles extérieurs d’envergure, des mariages et des spectacles dans les bars de Montréal et de Québec. JAMAIS je n’aurais imaginé voyager à Toronto, Halifax, Minneapolis et plusieurs autres endroits pour faire des spectacles et divertir les gens. C’est FOU!!! #mercilavie

Comment ton Drag a-t-il évolué au fil des ans? As-tu l’impression que RuPaul’s Drag Race a eu un impact sur le milieu du Drag à Montréal? Crois-tu que l’âme de Guilda soit encore très présente?

Le transformisme, comme plusieurs autres formes d’art, a plusieurs sources s’inspiration et plusieurs tangentes différentes. Un peu à l’image d’un arbre : il y a un tronc commun qu’on pourrait appeler « Le Transformisme », il y a des grosses branches, comme la Drag, la personnification, le « Trash », le « look-a-like »; et il y a une foule de petites branches pour chaque style.

Honnêtement, je suis d’avis qu’il y a autant de styles de Drag qu’il y a de Drags, et que chaque Drag, même si elles se ressemblent parfois, sont uniques, parce qu’elles trouvent leur inspiration à divers endroits.

Personnellement, je n’ai jamais suivi RuPaul’s Drag Race, par manque de temps. Mais je constate l’impact majeur de l’émission sur l’univers des Drags, tant au niveau du public qui vient voir nos spectacles qu’au niveau des Drags elles-mêmes. Par contre, une chose me déçoit profondément sur l’émission : il n’y a jamais eu de participantes ‘Bio Queen’ (des filles qui font de la Drag). Je crois que ça ajouterait à la diversité de l’émission.

Y a-t-il quelque chose qui t’intéresse en particulier en musique ces jours-ci?

Évidemment, j’aime beaucoup les nouveaux artistes émergeants. J’aime la nouveauté et la fraicheur qu’ils/elles amènent à la scène musicale. J’aime aussi les artistes qui, peu importe leur âge, sont capables de se réinventer, capables d’amener des concepts différents et de démontrer, à travers leur art, qu’ils ont un réel talent, pas uniquement une équipe de producteurs et de créateurs qui font quasiment tout le travail à leur place.

J’ai récemment découvert la chanteuse française Jain, et j’adore sa musique, son univers et sa créativité. Elle me rappelle un peu Stromae, un chanteur que j’affectionne particulièrement et que j’ai même déjà interprété en spectacle.

Malheureusement, de nos jours, je déplore le recours quasi systématique à l’informatisation de la musique. On transforme et parfois même on produit électroniquement les voix des chanteurs/euses, les sons des instruments et toute la musique en général. Même si je comprends le contexte, je pense que tout le monde devrait, de temps à autre, retourner écouter un ensemble vocal, une harmonie ou un orchestre pour se rappeler à quel point la musique ‘brute’, naturelle et non-transformée est magnifique.

Qui a été ton influence musicale la plus importante?

Mon Walkman jaune!!! HAHAHA Même si je n’ai plus mon Walkman depuis de nombreuses années, je me souviens PAR CŒUR des chansons que j’ai écoutées et ré-écoutées en boucle sur mon fameux walkman. Je me souviens encore de la cassette ‘DANCE MIX 95’ que j’ai écoutée ad nauseum. Encore aujourd’hui, je hurle ‘C’EST MA TOUNE’ lorsque j’entends les chansons qui jouaient dans mon Walkman. J’ai payerais cher pour retourner à cette époque où on appréciait encore plus les chansons, car c’était c’était tout un travail d’avancer et de reculer sans cesse la cassette pour trouver LA chanson qu’on voulait entendre. HAHAHA

Décris-nous ta journée parfaite.

Ma journée parfaite inclut trois choses fort simples : du soleil, une plage et mon équipement de plongée. Je suis réellement comme un poisson dans l’eau. J’ADORE faire de la plongée, principalement dans les endroits du monde où l’eau est d’un magnifique bleu clair et regorge de poissons colorés. C’est une sensation à la fois enivrante et reposante de pouvoir être sous l’eau, parmi toute cette faune. Sous l’eau, tout semble au ralenti. C’est fascinant!

Je rêve un jour de pouvoir faire de la plongée et de croiser de gros mammifères, comme des baleines. Ce doit être hallucinant comme expérience.

Du même coup, chaque expérience sous l’eau me rappelle l’importance de la faune aquatique, de sa diversité et surtout, l’importance de la respecter et de la protéger.

Tes trois Drag Queens préférées.

C’est tellement difficile à dire. J’aime une foule de styles de Drags, et quand je voyage, je rencontre souvent des Drags remarquables, alors c’est difficile d’en choisir que trois. Une chose est sûre, c’est que j’adore les Drags qui me font rire. Celles qui ont une animation hilarante, mais sans tomber dans la vulgarité facile. Celles qui performent des numéros créatifs, différents, drôles et surprenants.

Singin' it, Scattin' it, and Swingin' it, in their own way

Since the beginning of the jazz genre, vocalists have played their part in developing the repertoire. Whether In collaboration with jazz instrumentalists or singing a cappella, jazz vocalists have pushed the genre to new boundaries, surprising us with their phrasing, melodic or harmonic interpretations, and delighting and entertaining us with their unique vocal scat solos. There is no one-size-fits-all here. While you may have heard these songs before, you are certain to enjoy discovering a different vocal take on your favorites. You're also likely to hear a few songs and voices you've never heard before. The Contemporary Vocal Jazz Channel on Stingray Music celebrates jazz vocalists from around the world, who are active in today's jazz scene.

Bobby McFerrin

"Don't Worry Be Happy" may be the song that he is most well known for, but Bobby McFerrin has given the world of vocal jazz a distinguished legacy of vocal music. Whether singing solo, in a duet or jazz ensemble, or with his Voicestra vocal ensemble, McFerrin is a delight to listen to and watch perform. He surprises us with every vocal expression that he creates and moves us with every beat that he taps or claps out. A true master of vocal music, he continues to tour, generously offering us pure, authentic, playful, improvised musical performances.

Sheila Jordan

Sheila Jordan started singing in the 40s and is still going strong today. Influenced by instrumentalists, Jordan fell under the musical bebop spell of Charlie Parker, absorbing everything he could teach her. Known by musicians as a singer with good ears, Jordan phrases lyrics, bends and scoops notes, sings rhythms as a musician, all with the vocal dexterity of a master.

Jordan has played with the who's who of jazz history: Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Steve Kuhn, Steve Swallow, Cameron Brown and many more. With more than 20 albums to her name, she's also sat in on multiple recordings for other jazz legends like George Russell and Carla Bley.

Sheila Jordan, who turns 90 in November, continues to perform and to share her knowledge by teaching and inspiring jazz singers around the world, with the playfulness and exuberance of a child.

Kurt Elling

He scats, he swings, he sings: Kurt Elling does, year after year, performing more than 200 gigs a year to audiences around the world. His beautiful, resonant voice has adorned 13 albums, earned him 12 Grammy nominations, with one Grammy win for Best Jazz Vocal Album "Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sing The Music of Coltrane and Hartman". Whether he's singing a standard, pop or folk song, he owns and commands the song, playing it his way and making it new again. Offering his suave caring voice, rhythmic sensitivity and dynamics, the debonair Elling finds a way to personally express the song's meaning, with such an apparent ease. Kurt Elling is the quintessential jazz singer.

Cecile McLorin Salvant

First prize winner of the 2010 Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition, Cecile McLorin Salvant lept into the jazz scene without hesitation, releasing 3 albums within 5 years. "Woman Child", was nominated for Best Vocal Jazz Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards, while her 3rd and 4th albums, "For One To Love" and "Dreams and Daggers" both won the Grammy Award for Best Vocal Jazz Album, in 2016 and 2018 respectively. That's two Grammy Awards before the age of 30, and very much merited. With her astute attention to the lyric, careful choice of phrasing and melodic embellishment, she plays the songs in true storyteller fashion, captivating and entertaining us with every note and word she sings.

Jacob Collier

The 23-year-old British singer Jacob Collier arrived on the jazz scene in true 21st-century style: via YouTube videos that went viral. Collier's sense of harmony and rhythm are out of this world. His debut album, entitled, "In My Room", was made completely by Collier: he recorded it, he arranged it, he performed all of the vocals and instrumentation, in his room. His arrangements of "Flintstones" and "You And I" from the album won him two Grammys: Best Arrangement: Instruments and Vocals ("Flintstones") and Best Arrangement: Instruments or A Cappella ("You And I"). His musical talent is not restricted to his room, he performs live, alone on stage with his multiple instruments and vocal looping machines that he controls jumping from one to another to keep the song going, all while maintaining harmonic and rhythmic perfection. Nothing short of amazing to listen to and behold. His future is bright.
