I hate this band. Cause every time they release one of their new catchy and haunting rock anthems, I spend days and nights figuring out what band it reminds me of. Is it Blue Oyster Cult, The Goblins, Black Sabbath, Kiss, or Type O Negative? Well done Papa Emeritus and friends, well done. You did it again! With “Hunter’s Moon,” the band once more borrowed all-over sound and imagery from goth metal, horror movies and theatrical rock bands. Love it!

10. “End of Me” - Billy Talent

Get ready for a wink to the ‘90s alt-rock sound. They even invited Rivers Cuomo (from Weezer) to sing on the track. An era when a lot of music, even when dark, could be a light at the end of the tunnel for the twisted teenagers or young adults we were. “End of Me” is just that, a feel-good tune flipping the bird to his tragic lyrics and putting a smile on our faces.

9. “Waiting on a War” - Foo Fighters

With this song, Wolfgang Van Halen’s one-man band avoided falling into the traps and coming out sounding like a pale copy of his legendary father's band. “Don’t Back Down” is pure and solid hard rock, niched halfway between classic Queens of the Stone Age and newer Volbeat. Still the family talent is felt, and ‘80s’ guitar hero riffs are all over the track.

6. “California Dreamin’” - Dirty Honey

Dirty Honey topped my “Time to Ride” playlist last summer along classic Deep Purple, Motley Crue and GnR tracks. Sometime rock just needs to be fun grooves and good vocals. And why did guitar solos disappear again? They are so much fun!

5. “My Lucky Card” – Billy Gibbons

Fully eclipsed (with reason) by the shocking death of ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill, Billy Gibbons’ new grimy blues-rock album stayed in the dark. Too bad, since “My Lucky Card” is a direct road trip back to the band’s late ‘70s’ albums. It’s the best music Billy G released in years.

4. "Built by Nations” - Greta Van Fleet

Rock and roll imposters or Rock and roll saviors, every Rock fan has is opinion on the UK quartet but they are definitely now a fixture of the Nostalgia Rock sound lining up radio anthems. Heat Above slowly rose from the shadow of sister hit Heat Above and is definitely born for a longer life…

3. "The Bandit” - Kings of Leon

Did When You See Yourself bring us the best Kings of Leon music since Only by the Night? Probably. And “The Bandit” leads that strong, overlooked, great opus. Hopefully, the return of live music festivals in 2022 will give “The Bandit” and other perfectly crafted alt-rock gems on this album, a well-deserved second life.

2. “Crawling Kingsnake” - The Black Keys

Some said this Delta blues classic rendition album just showed how The Black Keys may have become an uninspired record label pleaser. But most fans digged it and rock radio played the hello out this song. And their name is back on the top row of many festival headliners. So maybe blues-influenced garage rock is just what the band does best.

It’s a simple but epic masterpiece rooted in Americana, ‘80s and indie rock. “I Don’t Live Here Anymore” will make you want to wander on a country road or in a pile of old vinyls. The song features waves of vintage guitars backing inspiring lyrics that could come straight out of Springsteen’s Nebraska or U2’s Rattle and Hum.

L’année 2018 est sur le point de s’achever. Toutefois, avant de tourner la page sur ce millésime, pourquoi ne pas prêter attention à ses récoltes musicales les plus marquantes. Voici 10 joyaux qui ont su nous toucher, divertir, élever l’âme, voire même nous secouer. Levons nos verres aux meilleurs albums de l’année 2018!

1. Après de Fred Pellerin

Ce disque, c’est Fred Pellerin qui nous invite dans le confort de sa maison. Nous conviant chaleureusement à prendre place dans son salon, sur le bord d’un magnifique feu de foyer, un bon café chaud à la main. Ses interprétations nous réconfortent et nous calment. Un véritable temps d’arrêt au flux continuel de nos espaces-temps trop souvent expéditifs. Fred Pellerin nous aide à prendre le temps au lieu de courir après.

2. Darlène d'Hubert Lenoir

Album pop audacieux qui mélange les influences de soul, de glam rock, de jazz et de psychédélique. De beaux arrangements à l’étoffe libérée qui donne envie de danser. Et que dire de la présence du saxophone qui titille nos tympans de ses admirables lignes mélodiques. Un opéra postmoderne qui a les qualités de traverser le temps. En prêtant une oreille à la musique d’Hubert Lenoir, nous nous ouvrons de surcroît à cette nouvelle génération d’artistes inventifs et surprenants.

3. Cure d'Eddy de Pretto

Un album rap qui puise son essence dans la chanson française. Brel et Brassens auraient été certainement séduits par ce jeune auteur. Les textes sont vifs, incisifs et lui permettent de matérialiser ses maux en d’admirables combinaisons de mots. Il se raconte avec éloquence et véhémence. Une perle d’inventivité qu’Eddy de Pretto offre à la musique française. Ses textes sont des colliers de mots que l’on porte fièrement au cou, soit entre le cœur et la tête, entre la raison et la passion. Là où l’émotion est interprétée avec une grande lucidité.

4. Bleu nuit de Claude Bégin

Véritable menuisier de la chanson, Claude Bégin signe la réalisation et les arrangements de son 2e album avec grande inspiration. Le multi-instrumentiste assemble efficacement de jolies mélodies pop à des rythmes urbains. Superbement, il fait jaillir d’excellentes envolées de cordes sur ses chansons. C’est d’ailleurs ces arrangements orchestraux qui confèrent une aura cinématographique à l’ensemble de l’œuvre. La puissance de sa musique nous transporte pleinement sur la chanson "Si tu m’invites".

5. Petites mains précieuses d'Ariane Moffatt

Un album soigné et poli. L’auditeur est respecté dans sa quête à recevoir des chansons justes et professionnellement réalisées. Et c’est justement ce professionnalisme qui donne à cet album sa force. Avec Philippe Brault à la réalisation, la musique et les paroles sont d’une qualité qui confère à ce disque une belle profondeur. Chaque mot y est déposé comme on porte un enfant à son lit. Avec intelligente et attention, Ariane Moffatt nous livre des chansons intimes directement tirées de son essence.

6. Premier Juin de Lydia Képinski

Dès l’écoute de sa chanson portant le même titre que l’album, nous vivons une expérience auditive hors du commun. La recherche d’un ailleurs dans sa démarche artistique nous séduit totalement. Espiègle, elle se livre avec une vigueur juvénile. L’ensemble de l’œuvre est empreint une souveraineté vitaminée. C’est dans un rock-électropop parfaitement assorti que sa proposition musicale reste brillamment oxygénée. Bien qu’elle puisse parfois jouer autour de la piscine des conventions, elle n’y plonge jamais. Pas même un orteil. Elle ne fait que la surveiller afin de ne pas y tomber par inadvertance.

7. L'amour et le chaos d'Alfa Rococo

Un voyage captivant à travers les hauts et les bas de notre époque précaire. Le duo peint un portrait lucide de notre société où le pessimisme et l’optimisme se rencontre à couteaux tirés. La musique pop moderne qu’ils proposent se veut un excellent vecteur d’espérance qui perfore l’épaisse couche de nos angoisses urbaines. Dans un élan de conviction, Alfa Rococo nous souffle à l’oreille que quelque chose de plus beau va renaître. Une brise poétique à nos âmes affligées.

8. En cas de tempête, ce jardin sera fermé de Coeur de Pirate

Un 4e album bien ficelé pour cette auteure-compositrice-interprète de qualité. Sa poésie ne manque jamais à l’appel sur cet album exclusivement francophone. Cœur de Pirate nous offre de belles mélodies pop française moderne qui prennent racine dans un romantisme tout aussi contemporain. Si l’amour a toujours été chanté, la chanteuse poursuit cette tradition dans une intensité et une beauté dont seuls les artistes de talent savent le faire.

9. Grosso-Modo de Seba et Horg

Avec leur premier « single » Vintage à l’os, le duo est arrivé en force dans le décor musical québécois. Des chansons créées avec d’honnêtes et efficaces arrangements. On baigne dans une atmosphère musicale légère sans être simple. L’humour y est bien joué sans jamais tomber dans la dérision facile. Du pur divertissement! Des textes bien ancrés dans la culture populaire. Cet album est Grosso-Modo la vision de nous qu’il nous manquait.

10. Les matricides de Fuudge

Fuudge, ce sont des musiciens montréalais diplômés en matière de rock abrasif et puissant. Parfois, ils s’évadent dans des passages psychédéliques pour mieux revenir au rock lourd. Tel un éléphant dans une boutique de porcelaine, ça brasse et ça casse! De solides lignes mélodiques dessinées au crayon noir foncé provoquent une catharsis émotionnelle. Les crottes sur le cœur sont rapidement chassées. Le « Air guitar » est également garanti.

Jazz has celebrated enormous resurgence in 2018. Many jazz festivals’ lineups highlighted young and upcoming artists, while different radio and video broadcasts gave them exposure that has been unprecedented over the past 30 years. It almost seems that jazz started looking towards the future instead of its rich history, which hasn’t really been the case since the 1980s when the last boom of really young jazz musicians from the United States appeared on the scene. With this in mind, we have selected 10 nominees for jazz album of the year. Each, in one way or another, reflect jazz’s mood in 2018.

Ezra Collective - Juan Pablo: The Philosopher | Enter The Jungle Records

The debut release of the London-based group Ezra Collective has already won the prestigious Jazz Album of the Year Award at Gilles Peterson’s 2018 Worldwide Awards. Recorded in the legendary Abbey Road Studios and partly mixed by Sam "Floating Points" Shepherd, this album is one of 2018’s highlights.

**Joe Armon-Jones - Starting Today | Brownswood Records**

The pianist Joe Armon-Jones was one of 2018’s most productive jazz. He recorded with Ezra Collective and toured with them and Nubya Garcia. More importantly, Armon-Jones released his solo album, which is a soulful combination of original numbers that differ from everything else released this year.

**GoGo Penguin - A Hundrum Star | Blue Note Records**

The fourth studio release by the Manchester-based piano trio is further shaping the group's sonic identity: an elegant blend of jazz and electronic music elements, original compositions, as well as a subtle cinematic atmosphere. The trio has one of the most unique voices on the jazz scene today.

**Kamaal Williams - The Return | Black Focus Records**

It didn’t take long for Kamaal Williams to release his solo album after leaving the duo Yussef Kamaal. The unique musical aspects that made the duo special are all present in Williams’ new release, making it feel like an organic continuation rather than a new path in the pianist’s artistic career.

**Kamasi Washington - Heaven And Earth | Young Turks**

After releasing The Epic in 2015, Kamasi Washington was declared the saviour of jazz. The album’s success left huge shoes to fill for the saxophonist’s future releases. Yet, Heaven And Earth is a very similarly crafted sonic journey that lasts for more than 2 hours and further explores the meaning of spirituality in jazz.

**Maisha - There Is A Place | Brownswood Records**

Blending African and Eastern musical elements r with modality and expressiveness, Maisha’s debut album is one of the most exciting and fresh sounding releases of 2018. At times, the album’s atmosphere feels tribal and the overall hypnotic feel is what makes it sound so unique.

**Moses Boyd Exodus - Displaced Diaspora | Exodus**

The British drummer Moses Boyd has already proven that there are still fresh ideas to be born from the marriage between jazz and electronic music. His new release, however, reaches beyond the repetitive rhythmic pattern exploration and incorporates a beautiful jazz ensemble arrangements as well.

**R + R = Now - Collagically Speaking | Blue Note Records**

Robert Glasper has been one of the leading jazz pianists for a decade. His piano trio and the experimental band later set new trends in the music. Following the same path, Glasper’s new supergroup debut album’s featuring Christian Scott and Taylor McFerrin combines R&B, jazz fusion, and instrumental hip-hop.

**Sons Of Kemet - Your Queen Is A Reptile | Impulse!**

Led by Shabaka Hutching, Sons Of Kemet’s third studio album is perhaps the most political jazz release in years. Exploring racial and gender inequalities and dedicated to influential black women throughout history, it was nominated for the 2018 Hyundai Mercury Prize Album of the Year award.

**Various Artists - We Out Here | Brownswood Records**

The influential British music tastemaker, Gilles Peterson, assembled a compilation of tracks that represent London jazz music scene. The album’s release was followed by the video documentary portraying the music’s community and the musicians involved: Joe Armon-Jones, Maisha, Moses Boyd and many more.

Is it just us or has this been a crazy year in music so far? So many albums have been released, making it almost impossible to choose our favourites! From Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy to Leon Bridges’ Good Thing, here is our non-exhaustive list of this year’s best (so far). Read up and take a listen!

MGMT - Little Dark Age

After a few years of silence, MGMT makes a grandiose return with Little Dark Age. The band has evolved through time; starting off with the indie album, Oracular Spectacular (2007), and surprising us this year with a synth-pop based album. Theirs is a unique sound: experimental music with pop influences. Little Dark Age feels like a new beginning for the band, and it’s a promising one.

Rhye - Blood

Following the success of Woman, and after 5 years of radio silence, Rhye is back in full force with Blood. This album explores different genres while maintaining their signature smooth R&B sound. It is safe to say that Blood brings us on an eye-opening musical journey. Our romantic side loves it!

Cardi B - Invasion of Privacy

We can’t stop singing Cardi B’s whole album. From Latin-influenced songs to tracks with powerful verses, she proves she is one of the strongest and most talented female rappers in the hip-hop world. Some punchlines are laugh-out-loud funny. Worth the wait, and the listen.

Kali Uchis - Isolation

Kali’s debut album is simply amazing. After years of being a featured artist, she is finally forging her own path and uses her powerful voice to create a mix of reggaetón, funk, and R&B sounds. Her track “Tyrant” featuring Jorja Smith is outstanding, and the combination of their gorgeous voices makes us dream. Kali Uchis matches lush beats with an even lusher voice, and we love it.

Sofi Tukker - Treehouse

You will never find yourself losing interest listening to Sofi Tukker’s first studio album. Fun and refreshing, their electro beats have something “dancy” and colourful that will make you move. This American duo expands their creativity by including Portuguese lyrics in some of their songs, making it intriguingly different. With this music passion and creativity in a debut album, there is no doubt that they will continue to blossom in the music world!

Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer

Janelle proves us once again that she is a multi-talented artist. She can write, rap, and sing, all while delivering powerful messages on racial issues, sexuality, and feminism – to name just a few. This album is kind of a liberation for her, since she identifies as pansexual. All in all, a great insight into important societal themes in an upbeat and head-bopping way.

Leon Bridges - Good Thing

The authenticity behind this album is striking. Bridges gives us chills with his soul-centered voice. This album is the kind that you can easily play in the background because of its easy-listening nature, but can also get you moving and vibing to his more jazzy tracks. With its mix of slower jams and party music, this record is appropriate for any occasion. Enjoy!

Pusha-T - Daytona

We have been waiting for this album since 2015, and it doesn’t disappoint. It might be short, but it certainly is satisfactory, as quality has taken over quantity. Kids See Ghosts – Kids See Ghosts

One of the best collabs we’ve heard this year. It’s been 5 years since Kid Cudi left the GOOD Music label, and Kanye announced on Twitter that they were going to release a 7-track album together, making everyone go crazy. On this album, not only do you get the satisfaction of hearing Old Kanye’s production, but you get the vibe and the feeling of Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon era. The mix is purely nostalgic and magical.

Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour

Probably the most innovative and creative country artist of our era. Her vocals are delightful and sophisticated. The East Texas singer-songwriter brings a breath of fresh air and a ray of sunshine to our day. She will definitely change country music and leave her mark, and we are HERE FOR IT.
