Meet Sarah Legault, this year's JUNOS' "Video of the Year" winner, and Stingray Rising Stars prize recipient! She directed and animated the video for iskwē's song "Little Star." This award-winning video is both beautiful and impactful, conveying the theme of missing and murdered Indigenous women and youth. Sarah Legault sat down with us, so you can get to know the artist behind the work, her inspirations, and more!

Interview with Sarah Legault, Stingray Rising Stars and JUNOs award winner!

What is your earliest artistic memory?

My earliest artistic memory was scribbling with my aunt Laurie on paper, and her telling me to try and find images within the scribbles as we coloured them in.

Where/When did you become an artist professionally?

I moved to London Ontario in 2002, because I wanted to get involved in the vibrant arts scene that I discovered. I later had my first group art exhibition in 2004 (with many to follow).

Who and what are your main influences?

I do have many influences in my life. To name a few: I adore the animations of The Quay Brothers, the storytelling and visuals of Guillermo Del Toro, the down to earth and prolific energy driven powers of Nile Rodgers, and out of the box creators such as Salvador Dali, Marina Abramović and David Lynch.

How did you come to do the music video for iskwē?

iskwē, contacted me after seeing a project that I animated and co-directed for Billy Talent - A Ghost Ship of Cannibal Rats. I then went to see her perform in Hamilton Ontario, at the Cotton Factory, and introduced myself to her after the show - at this point we started to brainstorm ideas for a music video over the following year.

What do you plan to do with the prize money?

It will more than likely be used to help create future projects.

If you had to live inside a music video for the rest of your life, which would it be and why?

This is a very hard (but great) question… a lot of videos that I admire are videos that would be more of a nightmare scenario to live in for the rest of my life.

At the moment I would have to say; Amanda Palmer and Edward Ka-Spel - The Clock At The Back Of the Cage, Directed by: Christy Louise Flaws, Chris Bennett, & Luke O’Connor.

I love the directors vision of a large scale interchangeable dreamscape, made up of bedroom materials. I feel like living in this environment, you’d quickly master the ability to build new scenes in order to control your environment and create your next adventure.

Due to concerns surrounding COVID-19, we are sad to report that The Juno Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 14 in Saskatoon, has been cancelled.

As part of its longstanding partnership with the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), Stingray is proud to be at the JUNOS again this year. We’ll be attending and covering various events, presenting one of our prestigious Stingray Rising Stars awards, and promoting our Canadian talent on our JUNOS-themed music channel.

STINGRAY RISING STARS

During the JUNO Gala Dinner and Awards on Saturday, March 14, Stingray will present the Video of the Year category. Stingray is thrilled to contribute to Canadian artists’ continued success by presenting a $3000 bursary to the winner as part of the Stingray Rising Stars program. This initiative sets out to discover, encourage, promote, and champion new up-and-coming Canadian artists.

The mission and vision of Ali Eisner

On Saturday March 16, 2019, Stingray presented the Video of The Year award accompanied by a $3,000 bursary. This year’s Stingray Rising Stars nominees were Peter Huang, Ben Knechtel, Andrew Hines, Ali Eisner, and Andrew de Zen. The bar was set high as last year’s winner was innovative artist Claire Boucher aka Grimes. This year, 2007 Stingray Rising Stars winners Tokyo Police Club introduced the award mentioning how invaluable the support from Stingray was for their career.

The 2019 Video of The Year winner went to Ali Eisner for their video “No Depression,” for Juno Award-winning Toronto singer and songwriter Bahamas, aka Afie Jurvanen. The video, which was beautifully shot on Kashe Lake in Ontario, follows Bahamas’ tongue-in-cheek approach to depression, with lyrics like “I give the doctor a description/ And he just writes a prescription/ Or two.” Ali brilliantly uses puppets to deal with more serious issues, and this video is no exception. About Ali Eisner

Ali J. Eisner has worked extensively both in front of and behind the camera for more than two decades as a director, creative producer, writer, television puppeteer and composer. The 2019 JUNO Award winning and three-time-GEMINI Award nominee has created a variety of network shows for CBC, TV Ontario, FOX, Disney and NBC, in addition to extensive work with musicians, collaborating in a wide range of mediums. Eisner was the creator of Mamma Yamma for CBC Television, and was a director and supervising producer for The Sunny Side Up Show on PBS Kids Sprout. In partnership with Taqqut Media & Inhabit Education, Ali has traveled throughout Northern communities in Nunavut, teaching puppetry to school-age kids. Eisner also identifies as transgender/non-binary and brings awareness to LGBTQ issues through their broadcasted works across a multiplatform career.

We met with Ali on the JUNOS red carpet on Sunday and later sat down with them to tell us more about their win:

What is your earliest artistic memory?
So many. My folks gave me an Ernie Puppet at a very young age. It was always with me - I’d make it talk to everyone in a variety of voices. More artistic memories - painting with my mom and playing with all my dad's cameras. I'd snap the shutter for hours, even if the camera wasn't holding any film. I remember looking for neat ideas through the lens and for any composition that made me laugh. I also used to sit with a tape deck, playing random tunes for hours, speaking into a tube of toothpaste pretending I was a professional DJ.

Where/When did you become an artist professionally?
When I was 21 (I’m 45 now), I started as a morning kids host on YTV. I was that human in between the cartoons, talking to the kids at home and connecting with them emotionally and creatively. From there, everything took off, and I’ve been working in kids’ TV ever since. Since that time, I’ve had super fun runs making all kinds of on-air programs at NBC, CBC, TVO, PBS, FOX - really wherever there’s fun work, I’ll travel. Right now, I’m super focused on being my own boss.

Who and what are your main influences?
At the moment my main influence is being in nature. Big nature. Forests, mostly. I currently live in the city, so i’m really blown away at what each visit brings me. A bunch of chill, low-frequency time does wonders for me creatively. It really helps me dig deep, to see where I’m at, to reflect and focus. For me it supports authenticity. In terms of human influences: my favorite puppeteer is Frank Oz - I could watch his puppetry for a billion flamillion hours on end. At different ages I believe I’ve had a variety of neato human influences - looking back, they’ve mostly been musicians. My favorites to date are still Stevie Wonder & Joni Mitchell. They speak the words and feel all the feelings.

How did you come to do the music video for Bahamas?
I’ve known Afie for about 5 years now. The more we’d hang out with each other, we'd discover that our sense of humor was super similar. The vibe with Afie is super easy and relaxed. I just love him as a musician and as a human. He’s seen/known about my past work, so he approached me about the idea of creating a puppet music video for him and I was so super jazzed to make it happen. The process of working with Afie was dreamy. So easy. He just trusted me and let me do whatever I wanted. He’s not precious - and as an artist who loves to see how far I can go, that’s a great space to work in.

The video and song deal with issues of depression, what is your best advice for those coping with these life issues?
So many people deal with depression and don’t talk about it. They feel they can’t because there isn’t space for it - that it’s wrong to feel that way. There’s so much shame in society in and around the experience. Being able to talk about your depression - finding as many spaces of support as you feel comfortable to (therapy, friends, nature, etc.) to enable a place of healing to me, is very helpful. The support keeps energy moving and creates a healthy space to be seen and heard. For me, making stuff really helps. Creating. We're all fighting our own silent battles. I see you. You got this. xo

What do you plan to do with the prize money?
I’m going to buy a touch more camera gear so I can create some new things to watch. I have my eye on some new lenses - and maybe a larger travel bag so I don’t have to carry 18 thousand napsacks everywhere I go. I’ll also probably also buy some flowers, ukuleles and dinner for folks I know who are dealing with depression.

If you had to live inside a music video for the rest of your life, which would it be and why?
There are just so many music videos I love, so that’s a tough question! Wait - does a live performance count? There's a video that changed my life when I was 11 years old that is super meaningful to me. I was sitting in my folks’ living room, watching the 1983 Grammy Awards. Annie Lennox surprised North America- instead of performing as herself, she appeared singing as her alter ego, Earl, singing “Sweet Dreams”. She wore a handsome suit, sideburns and an Elvis-inspired haircut. She had a special flavour of swagger on stage that was so charming and bold, gender-wise. She was pushing boundaries in the mainstream, hard. As a little trans kid, I was watching in SHOCK - I was intensely connected to the performance in a way I could not then, at 11, describe. Her gender bend spoke volumes to me - it was the first time I had seen something of that nature - it felt like I was intimately experiencing watching my own feelings being reflected back to me. It made me feel not as alone. I can even remember what i was wearing. Oh. And I was eating jiffy pop.

On Friday, March 15, the Stingray team arrived at Toronto’s Union Central Station excited to be part of the JUNO Express, in collaboration with the JUNOS and Via Rail. As we headed to the JUNO Awards in London, Ontario, we hosted artists and fans for a private show in the Stingray Car!

The day before, the team flew to Toronto to set-up the Stingray Car to welcome over 200 VIP guests the next morning.

As guests arrived on Friday morning at the VIA Rail Canada Business lounge at Union Station, JUNOS and Via Rail teams, including Pierre Santoni (Director, Strategic Partnerships and Alliances- Via Rail), Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Coordinator, Partnerships and Strategic Alliances- Via Rail), and Byron Alfaro (Senior Coordinator, Brand Partnerships- JUNOS), greeted the team with huge smiles. We could feel the excitement, and the enthusiasm was palpable.

The train departed at 12:15 pm. Twenty minutes later, guests enjoyed an authentic and festive performance by JUNOS-nominated and Vancouver-based country music trio The Washboard Union. Stingray PausePlay’s Zac Monson (Stingray PausePlay Host and Content Manager for Stingray Music) then welcomed Adult Alternative Album of the Year nominee Gabrielle Shonk for a relaxed and amusing interview. At 1:25 pm, pop sensation Tyler Shaw swept a very crowded public off their feet. And finally, a last interview with JUNOS Breakthrough Group of the Year winners The Washboard Union closed the program. Interviews available soon!

Stingray hosted the Park Car, which included the Mural Lounge for interviews, the Bullet Lounge for live performances, and the Dome to take in the breathtaking views in a quiet setting. The entire section was part of a beautiful art deco classic stainless steel 1950s train. Bedrooms were originally in this area, and most of the panels were created by the legendary Group of Seven. After renovations in the ‘80s, the paintings, some of which were covered by wallpaper, were restored and sent to museums!

Each year, the JUNOs recognize Canadian and international artists who mark and influence the music industry. Eclectic, fresh and young, this year’s selection of nominees doesn’t disappoint. The awards ceremony nominated Hubert Lenoir three times, Loud Luxury four times, the young Bülow four as well, five times for the Canadian superstar The Weeknd, and six for the -almost- unbeatable Shawn Mendes. This year is a rendezvous for greatness, hosted by 12-time Juno-winner Sarah McLachlan.

The Sound and Vision of Claire Boucher

Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, continues to blow minds with her multi-disciplinary talents not only in music and visual arts but also in video.

This March at the 2018 JUNOS, she was recognized for the second year in a row for her talent as a director. Claire and her brother Mac Boucher won the 2017 Video of the Year for “Kill V. Maim”, a song from her acclaimed album Art Angels. This year, it was the stunning big-budget 7-minute clip for “Venus Fly”, featuring Janelle Monáe, that showcased the evolution of Boucher’s unique vision.

The video not only won the Stingray Music-sponsored 2018 Video of the Year award, but Claire’s overall artistry also earned her the Stingray Rising Star award, which is part of the Stingray Music mission to champion Canadian artists.

The Grimes Gaze

Claire Boucher first began directing out of necessity. In her 2012 breakout video for “Oblivion”, video-maker and friend Emily Kai Bock first showcased the Grimes vibe by framing Claire in headphones bopping and singing to the camera “as the most dominant thing in the frame while at the same time surrounded by men twice her size.” The clip was an Internet sensation that launched both her music and the engaging Grimes persona.

However, her next experiences in video were like a step backward. She quickly learned the industry was rife with male directors imposing their “male gaze” on female artists - always trying to slip in a butt or boob close-up for no logical reason. So, she decided to direct and edit her videos herself. She quickly reveled in the creative opportunities the form gave her. Colours, wardrobe, improvisation, and dance – none of it typical of music video conventions – have since received the one-of-a-kind Boucher treatment.

In an era when Beyoncé’s Lemonade has morphed the standard “record album” genre into a new art form of sound and vision together, Claire has been creating a series of colour-infused videos for song after song from Art Angels. This new form sometimes requires reworking a tune to make it better serve the video, which is the case with “Venus Fly”. The extravagant, futuristic clip offers an alternate mix of the song over the credits.

Cutting-edge collaboration

On April 10, Janelle Monáe released the song and video for “PYNK”, featuring Grimes, from her chart-blazing album Dirty Computer. The two uncompromising artists with bold new visions together again!

Claire Boucher will receive the Hi-Fidelity Award for creating video art in a consistently creative and innovative way this May 13 at the 2018 Prism Prize screening and awards presentation at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. The “Venus Fly” video is also in the running for the Prism Grand Prize (which comes with a sweet $15,000 as well).

The 2018 JUNO Awards were rich in love, empowering statements, kindness, and what’s most important: humans from around the world celebrated Canadian bands and artists from Coast to Coast to Coast.

We’ve discovered the music of great craft and multifaceted charm. For some, it was the celebration of lifetime achievements and for others, it was the opening chapter of a thrilling music career.
