Rock et Belles Oreilles (ou RBO) est un groupe humoristique québécois qui a vu le jour en 1981, à la radio communautaire de Montréal. Il fête donc ses 40 ans cette année! Le 15 mai 2021 plus précisément.

Stingray Musique est honoré de souligner cet anniversaire durant tout le mois de mai. La chaine RBO de Stingray mettra de l’avant leur solide répertoire musical. Plus de 40 chansons signées Rock et Belles Oreilles! Pensons à des incontournables tels que Ça rend rap, Bonjour la police, Le feu sauvage de l'amour ou I want to pogne pour ne nommer que ceux-là!

La chaine RBO sera enrichie par plus 250 chansons des années 60 à aujourd’hui, spécialement sélectionnées par chacun des membres du groupe. Vous aurez également le plaisir d’entendre André Ducharme, Yves Pelletier, Guy A. Lepage, Bruno Landry, Chantal Francke et Richard Z. Sirois présenter plusieurs chansons, de manière anecdotique, humoristique, nostalgique, personnelle et même, vous vous en doutiez parfois « baveuse »!

Découvrez quelle chanteuse faisait rêver Yves à 16 ans, qui était le groupe préféré de Guy A dans son enfance, sur quelle chanson Richard Z a embrassé pour la première fois etc… Plus de 70 introductions parlées qui vous feront sourire ou rire à coup sûr!

RBO a su rallier un vaste public par le biais des disques, de la radio et de la télévision ainsi que lors de tournées à succès. Au fil des ans, RBO a sorti pas moins de huit albums de sketches et de chansons.

These days on television, the short-form music video seems to have lost its way. Specialty TV stations that used to be devoted to airing country music have all but forsaken the genre to focus on reality shows and sitcoms.

And as nature abhors a vacuum, Stingray is stepping up to the plate to fill the void with the introduction of Stingray Country, a television channel devoted to showcasing country music videos from the 90s to today. It is the only dedicated country music channel in Canada.

The Sound and Vision of Claire Boucher

Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, continues to blow minds with her multi-disciplinary talents not only in music and visual arts but also in video.

This March at the 2018 JUNOS, she was recognized for the second year in a row for her talent as a director. Claire and her brother Mac Boucher won the 2017 Video of the Year for “Kill V. Maim”, a song from her acclaimed album Art Angels. This year, it was the stunning big-budget 7-minute clip for “Venus Fly”, featuring Janelle Monáe, that showcased the evolution of Boucher’s unique vision.

The video not only won the Stingray Music-sponsored 2018 Video of the Year award, but Claire’s overall artistry also earned her the Stingray Rising Star award, which is part of the Stingray Music mission to champion Canadian artists.

The Grimes Gaze

Claire Boucher first began directing out of necessity. In her 2012 breakout video for “Oblivion”, video-maker and friend Emily Kai Bock first showcased the Grimes vibe by framing Claire in headphones bopping and singing to the camera “as the most dominant thing in the frame while at the same time surrounded by men twice her size.” The clip was an Internet sensation that launched both her music and the engaging Grimes persona.

However, her next experiences in video were like a step backward. She quickly learned the industry was rife with male directors imposing their “male gaze” on female artists - always trying to slip in a butt or boob close-up for no logical reason. So, she decided to direct and edit her videos herself. She quickly reveled in the creative opportunities the form gave her. Colours, wardrobe, improvisation, and dance – none of it typical of music video conventions – have since received the one-of-a-kind Boucher treatment.

In an era when Beyoncé’s Lemonade has morphed the standard “record album” genre into a new art form of sound and vision together, Claire has been creating a series of colour-infused videos for song after song from Art Angels. This new form sometimes requires reworking a tune to make it better serve the video, which is the case with “Venus Fly”. The extravagant, futuristic clip offers an alternate mix of the song over the credits.

Cutting-edge collaboration

On April 10, Janelle Monáe released the song and video for “PYNK”, featuring Grimes, from her chart-blazing album Dirty Computer. The two uncompromising artists with bold new visions together again!

Claire Boucher will receive the Hi-Fidelity Award for creating video art in a consistently creative and innovative way this May 13 at the 2018 Prism Prize screening and awards presentation at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. The “Venus Fly” video is also in the running for the Prism Grand Prize (which comes with a sweet $15,000 as well).

Il n’y a pas de jazz au FIJM ?!?

Depuis 39 ans, le Festival international de Jazz de Montréal fait vibrer la métropole québécoise au rythme du jazz, du blues, du gospel, de la musique du monde, etc. On entend toujours une personne, qui n’achète pas de billets de spectacle, dire qu’il n’y a plus de jazz au FIJM. Assis devant la programmation en salles, je peux vous assurer que c’est faux ! La musique jazz n’a pas de date d’expiration. Du jazz minimaliste jusqu’à l’électro, des jeunes recrues aux légendes, les jazzophiles en auront encore une fois pour leur argent ! On ne fait pas le plus grand festival de jazz au monde sans une touche d’éclectisme. L’équipe de programmation jazz de Stingray s’est réunie pour déterminer 5 coups de cœur… Ça n’a pas été facile…

Un spectacle de Snarky Puppy au Québec, c’est une communion. Un moment spirituel où tout le monde sort gagnant. Connus pour leurs longues envolés et invités spéciaux de dernière minute, la soirée s’annonce parfaite!

Nous ne voudrions pas passer sous le silence la présence de de la bête du B3, la légende Dr. Lonnie Smith qui s’installe au Gesù les 5, 6 et 7 juillet. Le jeudi, le saxophoniste Chris Potter se joint au trio de Smith pour une belle soirée riche en improvisation. Le vendredi, le chanteur-musicien âgé de 75 ans, accompagné de neuf musiciens, nous fera vivre la groove de son album Evolution. Finalement, samedi c’est en toute intimité que le docteur nous reçoit. Il nous présente les pièces de son dernier opus All in My Mind paru au début de l’année sur l’étiquette Blue Note.

Kendrick Lamar has won the Pulitzer for Music for his album DAMN. and we should all take a moment to understand the historical implication of this moment.

You often hear people talk about modern musicians as the Mozart or Beethoven of our era. I’ve personally had these discussions about artists ranging from Paul McCartney to Trent Reznor and there are arguments to be made that these musicians are just as lyrical and melodic as the classical music canonical composers.

However, discussions between music-lovers about the significance of their favorite artists in the broader history of music is a far cry from an institution such as the Pulitzer for Music consecrating one of them alongside Aaron Copland, George Crumb, Wynton Marsalis, John Adam, and Jennifer Higdon.

I mention Wynton Marsalis because he was the first jazz artist to win the prize in 1997. He was only able to do so because the previous year the board of the Pulitzer Prize had decided to change its rules.

From 1996 onwards the “musical composition” could be music that wasn’t necessarily composed in what we consider the classical-music framework. After Wynton, there was an honorable, posthumous prize for Thelonious Monk in 2006, and Ornette Coleman won the prize in 2007 for his Sound Grammar album.

Within this expansion of musical compositions to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music over the past 20 or so years, it actually makes sense for Kendrick Lamar to be the first winner operating outside of the world of jazz and classical music. Both of these genres have been going through a reinvention within this period. (For example, there’s Indie Classical, where a Juilliard-trained composer such as Nico Muhly works together with artists such as Björk.)

More importantly to the Kendrick Lamar story, there’s been some heavy crossover between jazz and hip-hop. In the UK, the jazz scene, nurtured by bands such as Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland, and with Shabaka Hutchings as the spider-in-the-web has morphed into a funky, danceable hip-hop-influenced music. The musical pinnacle being the album Black Focus by Yussef Kamaal and the recognition coming the way of the Sons of Kemet’s new album getting a major label release on Sony.

A similar melting of styles has happened in Los Angeles, where Flying Lotus has given jazz an electronic edge and where Kamasi Washington has become the standard-bearer for what is already referred to as the new West Coast jazz sound.

Furthermore, Kendrick Lamar himself sits within that West Coast jazz scene. Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus contributing to the 2015 masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly. And it’s not just Kendrick Lamar embracing jazz in his music, this is something that hip-hop itself is founded on.

But there’s more to it than that. Hip-hop and DAMN., in particular, is also a work of pop music. And with that, the real sense of history comes with awarding the Pulitzer to Kendrick Lamar. That “distinguished musical composition of significant dimension” can now describe any music.

Getting back to those discussions on which artists are like other great artists of the past. I recently heard Gilles Peterson say that he got to interview Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings in the same week. This had given him the feeling that Kamasi is our modern day John Coltrane, exploring the cosmic immenseness of our music. Shabaka, on the other hand, is our modern day Miles Davis continuously pushing the boundaries of what “jazz” is. I wonder where that leaves Kendrick Lamar?

Van 17 t/m 20 mei staat de volgende editie van Classical:NEXT op het programma in Rotterdam. Sinds 2012 wordt Classical:NEXT gehouden met als doel de klassieke gemeenschap te verenigen en een wereldwijde beweging op te zetten die de paden richting de toekomst van de klassieke muziek verkent.

Classical:Next is de afgelopen jaren uitgegroeid tot ’s werelds grootste internationale conferentie op het gebied van klassieke muziek. Onlangs werd het door de jury geselecteerde programma voor de editie van 2017 bekend gemaakt. Sinds de eerste editie hebben al ongeveer 3000 professionals en 1000 bedrijven vanuit 45 landen deelgenomen aan Classical: NEXT.

Vier dagen lang worden er presentaties, seminars en discussies gehouden tussen de verschillende deelnemers. Hierdoor blijft men op de hoogte van veranderingen, vernieuwingen en trends binnen het genre van de kunstmuziek. Daarnaast is er de mogelijkheid om nieuw talent, creatieve ideeën en toekomstgerichte business praktijken te promoten.

Dit jaar is ook een publieksfestival onderdeel van Classical: Next onder de naam Seriously? Adventures in Music. Daarin krijgt het publiek de unieke kans om de vernieuwers binnen de klassieke muziek live in Rotterdam te zien en te horen. Op 18 en 19 mei kan je terecht voor de klassieke muziek van de toekomst door het bezoeken van gratis lunchconcerten en internationale programma’s in BIRD, WORM en De Doelen, waar op 19 mei om 20:30 een première van het werk The Unchanging Sea van componist Michael Gordon door het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest ten gehore zal worden gebracht.
