C’est dans la salle feutrée et chaleureuse de l’Astral qu’avait lieu le concours pour remettre le premier Prix Oliver-Jones de l’histoire du festival, auquel Stingray associait fièrement son programme Prix Étoiles Stingray.

Fier partenaire du Festival International de Jazz de Montréal depuis plus de dix ans, Stingray était d’autant plus heureux d’associer son programme à la légende de jazz, Oliver Jones. Stingray remit hier soir un prix d’une valeur de 5000 $ à un jeune musicien de niveau universitaire se considérant issu des minorités visibles. Le lauréat s’est démarqué par son talent de compositeur, de musicien et d’arrangeur.

Animée par Stanley Péan, cette soirée vit se succéder les prestations de quatre jeunes étudiants musiciens et musiciennes : Théophile Abellard (Université McGill), Thania Veilleux Gomez (Université de Montréal), Corey Thomas (Concordia) et Jacob Do (Université McGill). Ils performèrent chacun avec brio trois morceaux devant un public réceptif et conquis, en format solo à quintet.

Le jury, composé de Cécile Peterson (productrice et gérante d’artistes, ainsi que la fille du légendaire Oscar Peterson), Jim Doxas (batteur, percussionniste et compositeur de renommée), Rafael Zaldivar (pianiste, compositeur, directeur artistique et éducateur d’origine cubaine) et Pierre-Jean Lavigne (Gestionnaire principal de produits chez Stingray) évalua leur performance et délibéra quelques minutes après. C’est le très talentueux Jacob Do qui fut désigné comme le grand gagnant en fin de soirée.

À propos de Jacob Do

Jacob Do est un joueur de saxophone présent sur la scène de jazz canadienne qui a reçu sa formation musicale à Edmonton. Jacob est installé à Montréal depuis 2017 et vient de terminer sa deuxième année de Jazz Performance à l’Université McGill, avec Rémi Bolduc. Cette année, il a joué comme ténor dans le premier grand groupe musical de McGill, Jazz Orchestra, mené par Christine Jensen. Jacob a joué dans de multiples salles, entre Montréal et Edmonton, puis pour la première fois cette année dans un orchestre au Yardbird Suite, accompagné de son quartet. Il a également partagé la scène avec de nombreux jazzmen Canadiens comme Kevin Dean, Jens Lindemann et feu Tommy Banks, pour ne citer qu’eux.

Le lauréat ou la lauréate se sera démarqué-e par son talent de compositeur, de musicien et d’arrangeur. Stingray associe son programme Prix Étoiles au Prix Oliver Jones, présenté pour la première fois au Festival international de jazz de Montréal.

La musique de l’auteur-compositeur-interprète brésilien Rodrigo Amarante — connu notamment pour avoir signé la chanson du générique de la série Narcos —, se niche entre saudade brésilienne, tropicália, rock alternatif et folk planant. Ne manquez pas la prestation de cet artiste au style enchanteur.

Hailu Mergia

28 juin

Figure emblématique de la scène jazz éthiopienne particulièrement dynamique dans les années 70, le claviériste, accordéoniste et arrangeur Hailu Mergia s’installe à Washington, où il vit une période plus difficile. Sa rencontre récente avec Shim Kovitz change sa vie. On redécouvre sa musique et la carrière du musicien de 71 ans prend un nouvel envol. Une renaissance artistique remarquable !

Joep Beving

29 juin

Les pièces contemplatives et minimalistes du pianiste hollandais, écoutées des millions de fois en ligne, constituent autant d’antidotes aux vies chaotiques et de déclencheurs d’émotions. Ses albums Solipsism, sorti en 2015 et Prehension, en 2017, ont fait de lui une grande figure du compositeur postclassique. Le nouvel opus de Beving, Henosis, plus orchestral et électro, clôt une trilogie consacrée à l’exploration de l’intime et de l’humanité. Pour son spectacle à Montréal, Joep Beving, en plus d’interpréter des morceaux au piano en solo, jouera également de la nouvelle musique avec ACME.

Quand la rumba rencontre l’électro via un vocodeur et des chants sacrés yorubas… Inédite, la musique percussive et accrocheuse de ce collectif portoricain ne s’appuie sur aucune programmation durant ses prestations enlevantes.

Theon Cross

1er juillet

Aussi bien dans le groupe Sons of Kemet qu’en solo, il transforme un instrument classique – le tuba – en organe d’où émergent des pièces et un groove insoupçonnés. Un des principaux acteurs de la scène jazz londonienne, il fait partie de ces jeunes musiciens florissants et innovateurs qui repoussent les limites, qui entremêlent les influences et les paysages sonores.

Tamino

2 juillet

Véritable révélation de la nouvelle scène flamande, Tamino subjugue dès ses débuts avec Habibi, un EP qui dévoile une voix bouleversante et un univers d’une riche profondeur. Le jeune auteur-compositeur-interprète d’origine égyptienne récolte depuis les éloges partout sur son passage. Pour son premier disque, Amir, il s’est fait accompagner d’un collectif de musiciens provenant pour la plupart du Moyen-Orient, dont certains ont le statut de réfugiés en Belgique.

PJ Morton

3 juillet

PJ Morton est l'homme le plus occupé du R&B. En plus de performer aux côtés de Maroon 5 et de collaboré avec des artistes comme Stevie Wonder, Solange et Erykah Badu, sa carrière solo prend son envol lorsque ses albums Gumbo et Gumbo Unplugged récoltent plusieurs nominations aux Grammys ces deux dernières années.

40 ans d’histoires avec André Ménard, Alain Simard et le Lorraine Desmarais band

4 juillet

Pour célébrer le 40e anniversaire du Festival (ainsi que ses propres 40 ans), la station de radio américaine spécialisée en jazz WBGO offre une émission toute spéciale, enregistrée et diffusée en direct de L’Astral. Préparez-vous à entendre toutes sortes d’anecdotes captivantes de la part d’André Ménard et Alain Simard, dont les propos seront illustrés par le Lorraine Desmarais band.

Flying Hórses

Ce deuxième album, Reverie, est issu d’une démarche très personnelle de Jade Bergeron, la multi-instrumentiste derrière Flying Hórses. C’est une rupture amoureuse et l’envie d’explorer un univers plus onirique qui ont inspiré les pièces de cet album plus sombre et dense. Rassurez-vous, il y a aussi de d'espoir, confirme l’artiste. Des sonorités islandaises et des envolées de piano magnifiques s’entendent dans cette ambiance post-rock.

Blick Bassy, the Paris-based, Cameroonian singer-songwriter is in town for this year’s Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. In anticipation of his upcoming performance, I spoke with him about his new album 1958, due out on June 21.

Listening to your new record and its political theme, I can’t help thinking about people like Fela Kuti, people who also felt the need to express the realities of their country. Could you tell me more about people like Ruben Um Nyobè, and what made you want to include him in your music?

I think that like many people of my generation, the need to know who we are is present and is felt in different ways, like an identity crisis. In this quest for self, given that the future is built only on the ashes of the past, I wanted to know a little more about my history, about my country’s history. All this led me directly to Um Nyobè, who was fighting for the equality of races, for the universal values and independence of Cameroon. He was who shot down in 1958, by the French army.

Despite the serious political themes of 1958, it feels as if you’re trying to let in as much sun in your songs as possible. I’m really enjoying your single Ngwa. I’d love to hear about how this song came about for you, both lyrically and in the studio.

When I decided to dedicate the album to Um Nyobè, I started composing melodies in my home studio, the street, in the car, in short everywhere, because for each record I have to compose about 150 to 200 melodies. After that, I select between ten to 20 people to choose 15 melodies on which I then write a text. Ngwa is one of the songs that already sounded like a song, as I had recorded guitar and voice on my smartphone. Then in the studio, it was simply a matter of fine-tuning the arrangements because we had done pre-production.

Could you tell me what are some of the main differences between your last record and the most recent one? For instance, I noticed there is practically no drums or percussion on the new one. Can you elaborate on that?

Since my previous album Akö, I decided to make a record without rhythmic instrument. I wanted to emancipate myself from the standards and the roles that are assigned to things and apply my own rules. I want to create a universe that allows me to express and bring out my emotions as effectively as possible. 1958 is the embodiment of this approach, with a more contemporary side. I think I can take it even further in the next albums.

It’s not your first time at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, and like most bands on the road, I’m sure you have rituals or habits before going on stage. What does a Blick Bassy pre-show look like?

Before each concert, I vocalize a lot because my voice takes time to warm up. It takes at least two to three hours of vocalizing, until the moment I go on stage. Then the second ritual is a thought for my ancestors through whom I can share my emotions, my vibrations, and my energy.

Lastly, what kind of legacy do you want to leave through your music?

One of the most important things I would like to pass on to the new generations is to demonstrate the importance of emancipating from barriers. To go further and further, and to surprise ourselves by pushing the boundaries that our societies impose on us.

Voici nos 4 découvertes coup de cœur du plus grand festival de jazz de la planète.

Sons of Kemet

2 juillet, 22h, L'Astral

Ce groupe britannique formé en 2011 combine le jazz, le rock, le folk caribéen, les sonorités africaines pour créer une nouvelle tangente jazz avant-garde. Leur spectacle endiablé a mis la foule en transe, on se serait cru dans une cérémonie vaudou! À découvrir sans tarder.

Altin Gun

4 juillet, 20h, dehors

Ce groupe originaire d’Amsterdam marie comme personne le folk turc, le funk, le psychédélique et le rock. Le résultat? Un son rétro avec une approche résolument moderne inspirée des plus grands tel que Selda, Baris Manso et Erkin Koray (dont ils font une reprise sur leur album). Vous voulez du nouveau et du frais dans vos oreilles? Ne cherchez plus!

Thundercat

2 juillet, 19h30, salle Wilfrid-Pelletier (première partie d'Herbie Hancock)

Le bassiste Stephen Lee Bruner, mieux connu sous son nom de scène, Thundercat, donne dans le funk, le R&B, le soul, le jazz et l’électronica. La virtuosité de ce multiinstrumentiste américain est indescriptible. Imaginez regarder dans un malaxeur avec un kaléidoscope (oui, oui!) Il est surtout connu pour sa collaboration avec Kendrick Lamar sur l’album To Pimp A Butterfly (leur chanson “These Walls” a été primée aux Grammys en 2015).

Misc

Fans de Gogo Penguin, Robert Glasper et badbadnotgood? Misc est pour vous. Ce groupe montréalais fait des vagues sur la scène jazz depuis presque 10 ans cumule les honneurs et les hommages, dont un prix Felix pour Album jazz de l’année et le grand prix du festi-jazz de Rimouski. Ce groupe c’est l’avenir du jazz avec des vidéos plus cools que cool, un son qui commande l’écoute sans être prétentieux et des envolés rythmiques reviennent toujours sur des bases solides. Rester sur place en écoutant Misc? Impossible!

La canicule battait son plein à Montréal lors de l’édition 2018 du Festival de jazz de Montréal (FIJM)! Samedi le 30 juin, Pierre-Jean Lavigne, Gestionnaire de produit principal, Stingray Musique, a bravé la chaleur pour se rendre à la scène Club Jazz Casino de Montréal afin de remettre une bourse de 5000 $ au compositeur de la meilleure pièce musicale choisie parmi les groupes en lice. En plus de la bourse, ce prix permettait également au lauréat de faire entendre ses œuvres sur une ou plusieurs chaînes jazz offertes par Stingray Musique.

C’est le pianiste de la relève de la scène jazz montréalaise, Jonathan Turgeon Trio qui s’est vu remettre cet honneur grâce à sa pièce « Kick la canne ». S’en est suivi une performance de feu digne des grands qui se sont déjà produit au FIJM. Vous pouvez d’ailleurs entendre « Kick la canne », dès aujourd’hui sur leur dernier album intitulé « Les rêves errants » paru en 2017.

Avec Hugo Blouin à la contrebasse (Brasser Brassens, Rose Vagabond, M’entends-tu?) et Jean-Philippe Godbout à la batterie (Gazoline, Summersett, Noem), le groupe s’est produit dans plusieurs salles à travers le Québec. Au cours des dernières années, on a pu entendre le trio dans diverses salles mythiques du jazz à Montréal, tels le Upstairs, le Dièse Onze et le Café Résonance. Un groupe de la relève à découvrir! Depuis près de 40 ans, le FIJM est, synonyme de passion musicale. Montréal, la métropole francophone d’Amérique devient chaque année, pendant une dizaine de jours, le lieu de rendez-vous des amateurs de toutes les musiques liées au jazz. Bref, pendant ces semaines magiques, c’est à Montréal que bat le cœur de la planète jazz !

Il n’y a pas de jazz au FIJM ?!?

Depuis 39 ans, le Festival international de Jazz de Montréal fait vibrer la métropole québécoise au rythme du jazz, du blues, du gospel, de la musique du monde, etc. On entend toujours une personne, qui n’achète pas de billets de spectacle, dire qu’il n’y a plus de jazz au FIJM. Assis devant la programmation en salles, je peux vous assurer que c’est faux ! La musique jazz n’a pas de date d’expiration. Du jazz minimaliste jusqu’à l’électro, des jeunes recrues aux légendes, les jazzophiles en auront encore une fois pour leur argent ! On ne fait pas le plus grand festival de jazz au monde sans une touche d’éclectisme. L’équipe de programmation jazz de Stingray s’est réunie pour déterminer 5 coups de cœur… Ça n’a pas été facile…

Sons of Kemet – 2 juillet 21h à l’Astral

Si vous vous demandez ce qu’on écoute dans un tout inclus situé sur une comète, c’est Sons of Kemet. Rythmes syncopiques, cuivres féroces, sons de pluie interstellaire, beaucoup seront ceux qui se demanderont comment revenir sur Terre après avoir vécu ce voyage astrale…à l’Astral!

Electro Jazz Lounge

Une des soirées les plus groovy cette année! 2 générations de hispters se livreront un combat de flânage mais qui sera le dernier à taper du pied et à se livrer à une session de grouillades délirantes? Le temps nous le dira.

Snarky Puppy – 28 juin 20h30 - MTELUS

Jazz d’Aujourd’hui

Un spectacle de Snarky Puppy au Québec, c’est une communion. Un moment spirituel où tout le monde sort gagnant. Connus pour leurs longues envolés et invités spéciaux de dernière minute, la soirée s’annonce parfaite!

Nous ne voudrions pas passer sous le silence la présence de de la bête du B3, la légende Dr. Lonnie Smith qui s’installe au Gesù les 5, 6 et 7 juillet. Le jeudi, le saxophoniste Chris Potter se joint au trio de Smith pour une belle soirée riche en improvisation. Le vendredi, le chanteur-musicien âgé de 75 ans, accompagné de neuf musiciens, nous fera vivre la groove de son album Evolution. Finalement, samedi c’est en toute intimité que le docteur nous reçoit. Il nous présente les pièces de son dernier opus All in My Mind paru au début de l’année sur l’étiquette Blue Note.

What can you expect from the Festival international de jazz de Montréal when you're used to the North Sea Jazz Festival? This question popped into my head a few months ago when I boarded a transatlantic flight that would bring me to Montreal. This city, known for its chilly winters, boasts a legendary festival season that culminates in the Festival international de jazz de Montréal.

It's only a few minutes' walk from the old city center to the urban festival grounds. For ten days, 34 indoor and outdoor venues offer great live music to a massive audience: the Place des Festivals alone welcomes 25,000 visitors. The combination of free and non-free concerts draws an enormously varied audience: men and women of all ages flock to enjoy the diversity that contemporary jazz has to offer.

The festival's first day features Canadian bands such as The Franklin Electric, Milk & Bone, and Cœur de Pirate. A day later, The Bad Plus is the first band to perform at the atmospheric stage of Gesù - Centre de Créativité. The audience embraces the energetic trio during this rock-solid performance, where drummer Dave King makes a particularly lasting impression. Later this evening at the Théâtre Maisonneuve it becomes evident that this is a drummers' night: in a brooding, masterful exploration of hard bop, funk, and pop, drummer Justin Tyson demonstrates why pianist Robert Glasper chose him as his sideman.

Whereas headliners mainly perform during the late afternoons and evenings, La Petite école du jazz takes center stage during the day. With their mouths agape, young music lovers and their parents take in this educational spectacle led by Victor-Jacques Ménard. His crash course prepares these little jazz lovers to continue their festival visit as they hold their parents' hands. A father and his son dance to Cory Henry and his The Funk Apostles who play a smashing show at Club Soda. This venue, which somewhat resembles the Max hall of Amsterdam's Melkweg, offers a varied selection of artists, from Somi, Ron Sexsmith, and Her, to Jacob Collier and Flavia Coelho. The shows of the latter two match Cory Henry's in terms of danceability: the Canadian audience instantly falls in love with the utterly charming Coelho, as well as the Quincy Jones protégé and multi-instrumentalist Collier.

An absolute highlight is Charles Bradley's performance at nearby Metropolis. The intense emotionality in Bradley's show transports his audience to another reality. The singer, who was diagnosed with gastric cancer only last year, is more energetic than ever before. Saying that Metropolis adores Bradley would be an understatement – and what's more, the feeling's mutual!

The other indoor venues, each wonderfully lit and decorated, are dedicated to more jazz-oriented artists such as Vijay Iyer, Gwilym Simcock, Ravi Coltrane, Mark Guiliana, Lisa Simone, and Phronesis. The latter Danish-British ensemble, led by bassist Jasper Høiby from Copenhagen, causes a quite a stir. This power jazz trio enjoys performing, and it shows. Their sublime interplay in the space between a tear and a smile touches the hearts of the Monument National audience.

The contrast between the indoor venues and the outdoor stages couldn't be bigger. Whereas the indoor venues focus on subtlety, attention, and concentration, the outdoor venue mean "party!" Starting at nightfall, concerts by the Afro-Brazilian groove collective Bixiga 70, the folk and roots band Pokey LaFarge, Quebec's very own world famous funk ensemble The Brooks, and Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band deliver grandiose spectacles. And as if this isn't enough, July 1 is dedicated to Canada's 150th anniversary. In celebration of the occasion, a 24-piece band plays an unparalleled show with Carly Rae Jepsen, Men Without Hats, Radio Radio, and Muzion. Despite a hint of commercialism, the collective delivers an unforgettable evening of dance, fireworks, and electrifying music.

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is a great gift for artists and visitors alike. Impressed and visibly touched, Anderson .Paak closes the festival in style with an amazing performance. Well into the small hours of the night, the ecstatic audience cheers when a reprise of Come Down is played in one of the numerous music cafés. The festival exceeds expectations: everybody feels included in this one great urban party. Ten days of music, ten days of partying, an actual marathon of musical energy. Was it worth crossing the Atlantic for? Absolutely! Keeping in mind Under the motto "images speak louder than words", I share with you some of my favourite photos of the festival.

While Europe's Montreux Jazz Festival has already begun (Jun 30, 2017 – Jul 15, 2017) and the North Sea Jazz Festival (July 7- July 9, 2017) is about to begin, their Canadian counterpart, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, kicked off its 38th edition on June 28, 2017.

An unparalleled combination of Canadian talent and wonderful musicians from all over the globe populate Quebec's most popular festival. As a Montreal-based company, Stingray can't sit this one out.

On behalf of Stingray DJAZZ, I will share highlights, favorites, and discoveries!

DAY 1

The first day of the festival is dedicated to Montreal's 375th anniversary. Canadian bands such as The Franklin Electric, Milk & Bone, and Cœur de Pirate warm up the city for the annual gathering of music lovers. Vocalist Cœur de pirate leaves a particularly lasting impression: the combination of the evening twilight and Béatrice Martin's mischievous voice create a cheerful atmosphere.

DAY 2

The Bad Plus (Le Gesù - Centre de Créativité)

Day two kicks off the festival's regular program that takes place mainly in the evenings. In spite of the poor weather, the crowds spill out to city’s 34-stage festival grounds.

I begin by catching the festival’s first concert by The Bad Plus at Le Gesù, one of the city’s oldest performance halls. Within seconds, it's obvious that this trio can't wait to get going. The three musicians display a boundless energy, guaranteeing an adventurous night.

The audience quickly embraces the band, especially bassist Reid Anderson's deadpan commentary. As soon as the trio plays the first bars to Maps – the opening number of the album It’s Hard – they once again prove how attuned they are to each other.

Drummer Dave King plays his inimitable licks without ever getting sidetracked from accompanying bassist Anderson and pianist Ethan Iverson. King's varied and subtle touch lifts his two bandmates to a higher level. Barring a less impressive rendition of Time After Time, The Bad Plus plays an excellent opening concert at Gesù.

Robert Glasper Experiment (de Maisonneuve Boulevard)

Later on in the evening, Robert Glasper brings his Experiment to de Maisonneuve Boulevard. Following Kendrick Scott's performance, a properly warmed-up audience greets Glasper with resounding applause when he walks out on stage.

Drummers Justin Tyson commands the stage and sets in motion a tight beat that dictates the mood for the rest of the evening. Musicians come and go as saxophonist, vocalist and keytar player Casey Benjamin shines both on and off stage, supporting the light show and joining a masterful, almost dark exploration of hard bop, funk, and pop.

Although the collective operates under Robert Glasper's name, the Fender Rhodes player doesn't deny any of his bandmates the opportunity to show off their musical mettle. With particularly impressive contributions from Tyson, every member of this unified collective is indispensable. Moreover, tonight's lighting technician deserves special mention for his impressive effort!

DAY 3

Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles (Club Soda)

Friday night is all about organist Cory Henry.

A diverse and excited audience of Henry fans, a striking number dressed in floral shirts, queues up outside the venue.

Henry, a Hammond B3 player from the Snarky Puppy family, is one of the most noteworthy artists on the jazz, funk, and soul scene. The reason why becomes abundantly clear when the New Yorker makes his entrance! The Club Soda audience jumps to its feet and rushes to the dance floor. Henry's phenomenal showmanship and unbeatable sound instantly forgive his run-of-the-mill lyrics.

This man's got the soul, he's got the funk, and he knows exactly what he's doing! Supported by his Funk Apostles, Henry delivers unreleased material from a forthcoming album. The raw, overdriven sound of his Hammond organ ignites the dance floor. On Saturday night, June 30, the Montreal Jazz Festival should by rights have been called the Montreal Funk Festival!

Saturday, July 1 has a touch of red and white, as Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary! The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal does not let this milestone pass by unnoticed: a sparkling ”Discothèque” closes the evening.

Before the festivities get underway, London prodigy Jacob Collier makes his Montreal debut at Club Soda. The multi-instrumentalist and Quincy Jones protégé shares the stage with no less than 10 instruments that he plays all by himself! This one-man band uses samples and live animations while he shifts his custom-built synth across the stage.

Collier, an exceptionally gifted, lisping charmer, wraps his audience around his little finger with playful ease. Some of his songs may have a cheesy tinge, but his show is a spectacle that everyone should see!

Knower (L’Astral)

Knower performs just a stone’s throw away at L’Astral. This Los Angeles-based semi-psychedelic indie electronica ensemble has worked with Snarky Puppy and does not shy away from playing some steaming funk licks.

Led by vocalist Genevieve Artadi and drummer Louis Cole, these five musicians thrive in their self-organized chaos. Cole, a creative character who is dressed for the occasion in pizza pants, uses any and every part of his drum kit. As it turns out, he is also a rapper and a semi-professional stand-up comedian. Knower's songs are diverse: from hip hop and power funk to psychedelic electronica, and even a spacy ballad.

Tonight, Knower follows its creative instincts much to the audience’s enjoyment. The audience leaves the venue smiling, making its way to the Place des Festivals next door to witness the conclusion of “Discothèque” featuring illustrious Canadians Carly Rae Jepsen, Men Without Hats, Radio Radio, Muzion, Buffalo Hat Singers, and more than 35 accompanying musicians.
