Women in Music is March's Special Programming, and it's dedicated to all those female singers and artists who inspire us through their songs and stories. We have chosen 5 women who have pushed boundaries and inspire us to fight for our dreams.

Dolly Parton

Besides from being a prolific writer, Dolly Parton has been an icon in country music for decades, paving the way for female artists. One of her first singles, "Just Because I'm a Woman", tells the story of a woman taking her emancipation over a man. Released in the late 60s, the song brought the sexual revolution to the Country Music fans. Later, her song "9 to 5" is an anthem for female office workers, besides of becoming the #1 hit in 1980. The song and film 9 to 5 -in which Dolly Parton plays the role of Doralee Rhodes, gave their titles to 9to5, an organization founded in 1973 with the aim of bringing about fair pay and equal treatment for women in the workplace.

Taylor Swift

One of the most inspiring artists of our time is of course Taylor Swift. Top writer, singer, performer and Billboard's woman of the decade are just some of her numerous achievements. She champions fellow female artists and is not afraid of denouncing the "toxic male privilege" in the music industry. Taylor Swift announced that a rerecording of one of her first albums, "Fearless," will be released in April. Fearless, indeed.

Beyonce

"The most alluring thing a woman can have is confidence," once said Beyoncé. Queen B's has always been a huge supporter of different social movements and especially feminism. Her extensive repertoire contains numerous female empowering anthems: "Indepedent Women" (early days with the Destiny's Childs), "Run the World (Girls)," "Single Ladies," "Pretty Hurts" and the list goes on. Did you know that in her hit “Flawless,” Beyoncé sampled a speech entitled “We Should All Be Feminists” by the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie? When not inspiring fellow women with her arts, Beyoncé militates in favour of gender equality support girls’ education through the association she co-founded, CHIME FOR CHANGE, and the Formation Scholars award program, which “encourages and supports young women who are bold, creative, conscious, confident, and unafraid to think outside the box.”

Cher

We couldn't talk about inspiring female artists without mentioning the most fabulous female icon, Cher. Cher is the only artist in history to rank on a Billboard chart for six consecutive decades. She has one of the most prolific careers of the music history. From the hippie-girl of “Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” to the to the success of “Believe” at the age of 52, Cher as never stopped braking records and pushing boundaries. The "Goddess of Pop" and actress is also an activist for LGBTQ rights, and an icon for the gay community.

Lizzo

Not only Lizzo became the third female rapper to top the Hot 100 without a featured artist, but also became the first #1 Black solo female R&B singer on the Hot 100 since Rihanna's hit "Diamonds". Needless to say the Lizzo is one of the most successful artists of her generation. After struggling with body issues at an early age, Lizzo became an advocate for body positivity. She celebrates self-love in her songs ("Mirror, mirror on the wall, don't say it 'cause I know I'm cute.", lyrics from "Juice"), music videos (in the music video for "Truth Hurts," Lizzo marries herself!), her performances (her group of dancers, the Big Grrrls, is composed of plus-size dancers) and truly in anything else she does!

Totó La Momposina

Totó La Momposina es una carismática leyenda viva de la canción afrocolombiana, la 'Reina de la Cumbia' original, cuya vida entera se ha dedicado a representar la música de la costa caribeña de su país. Totó ha sido fundamental para mantener estas tradiciones musicales vivas, llevándolas a un público internacional. Ella continúa trabajando incansablemente para promover la música de su tierra natal, impulsada por la pasión y la alegría de la interpretación. En el 2006 recibió el premio WOMEX Lifetime Achievement Award, en el 2011 recibió el Premio Nacional de Vida y Trabajo del Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia y en el 2013 el Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mercedes Sosa

Mercedes Sosa, la cantante folclórica argentina es conocida en toda América Latina como “La voz de los sin voz”. Su repertorio políticamente cargado, siempre fue representado con una voz potente, terrenal y apasionada. Ella es sinónimo de lucha, resistencia y libertad. Su carrera abarcó casi seis décadas, lanzó 70 álbumes, ganó tres premios Grammy Latinos y recibió varios títulos honoríficos, incluido el premio Fondo de Desarrollo de las Naciones Unidas para la Mujer (Unifem) en reconocimiento a su defensa de los derechos de la mujer.

Ana Tijoux, es la voz de las mujeres que callan por la violencia de género. Durante más de 20 años, la rapera ha denunciado las desigualdades e injusticias sociales a través de sus canciones. p>

Ivy Queen

Antes de que el reguetón fuera un género fácilmente identificable, y mucho antes de la presencia mundial de los movimientos de justicia impulsados por las redes sociales, Ivy Queen estaba haciendo música que se enfocaba en las experiencias de las mujeres. Ivy Queen se convirtió en la primera mujer miembro de The Noise. Para cuando lanzó su tercer álbum, Diva, el reguetón estaba en vísperas de un crossover global y su álbum preparó el terreno para ello. JLo recibio el premio Billboard 'Women in Music Icon' del 2020, se ubicó en el número uno de los "100 hispanos más influyentes" de People en Español en el 2007 y, en el 2012, encabezó la lista Forbes Celebrity 100.

Gloria Estefan

La cantante y compositora Gloria Estefan originalmente saltó a la fama en la década de 1970 al unirse a Miami Sound Machine. A medida que avanzaba hacia una carrera discográfica en solitario, y se convirtió en una de las primeras artistas latinas en lograr un gran éxito en todo el mundo. Si hubo una canción esencial del pop latino de los 80 que capturó la esencia de la década, es "Conga" de Miami Sound Machine. Esta y las otras canciones del álbum Primitive Love sentaron las bases para el pop latino tal como lo conocemos hoy. Gloria Estefan fusión de pop, disco y salsa vendió 100 millones de álbumes y ganó siete premios Grammy. 2021’s Top 10 Pop Songs Stingray Curators Wed, 12/01/2021

While plenty of artists have done their part in keeping the charts interesting in recent months, the most conspicuous thing is how the pop world has gravitated towards its most reliable pop stars over the past year. We are leaning more towards artists who are not in it for just one smash but as many as three or four in a row.

The most incredible part is how all these pop stars find new and creative ways to breathe life into their most recent hits. For that reason, their presence has been very reassuring during these times of turmoil.

10. BTS - Butter

Hands down, “Butter” is the unquestioned song of the summer. It has been immovable at number one since its release in May 2021. In this boastful and bouncy single, these winter-issue cover guys know just the right amount of cocky to put in to show us they know they are killing it. At the same time, they name-check the Army to let us know we still got them here.

9. Doja Cat ft. SZA – Kiss Me More

Listeners have been drawn into “Kiss Me More,” and from the moment Doja Cat delivers her first line, you immediately want to fall in love with this pop song. Once you hit the play button on this jam, you are stuck! And the icing on the cake is that we have a rare feature from SZA

8. Ed Sheeran – Shivers

“Shivers” is another punchy track of lovestruck pop. This track has Ed Sheeran humming over plucky strings, crisp handclaps, and his guitar’s chipper strum.

7. Justin Bieber ft. Daniel Caesar & Giveon – Peaches

Justin Bieber has been a prominent presence in pop since the decade started. This was the ideal track to begin heating the spring with its general warm weather vibes.

6. Kali Uchis – Telepatia

“Telepatia” was written before the pandemic, but we love how it captures that nostalgic essence of 2020. The highlight has to be the ultra-melancholic hooks about telepathic lovemaking. The track is essentially built around hooks that make every verse memorable and TikTok friendly.

5. The Weeknd – Take My Breath

“Take My Breath” is a disco-infused synth-wave track that hinges on themes of relationships, infidelity, and passion. As usual, The Weeknd covers the darker subjects in a very anthemic way in this track.

4. Lil Nas X – Montero (Call Me By Your Name)

The release of “Montero” has to be a major highlight in 2021. Something about this jam makes it such an unapologetic romp. Is it the blood-filled shoes, the twerking pole to hell, or the expert trolling on social media? You will love just how Lil Nas X captures that spirit of breaking free, especially after months of isolation.

3. Dua Lipa – Levitating

Levitating feels like that one gift that keeps giving. People enjoy its infectiously exuberant nature, especially after DaBaby revitalized this disco-fueled track with a new verse.

2. Silk Sonic – Leave the Door Open

“Leave the Door Open” flips the title of Teddy Pendergrass' “Close the Door,” a bedroom classic in 1978. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak homage hits all the right notes, and the video's imagery has emphasized the nostalgia with '70s fashion. This is the one track that confirms that Mars is the savviest pop music revivalist.

1. Olivia Rodrigo – Driver's License

This debut single made waves immediately after its release in early 2021. In this track, Rodrigo proves herself as a songwriter and vocalist. She hit a nerve by capturing specific emotions so eloquently- from betrayal to insecurity. This jam has had fans reliving the devastation of their failed first loves.

The year is 1981, Lady Di is preparing to tie the knot with Prince Charles, the film Raiders of the Lost Ark marks its debut in theaters, Ronald Reagan becomes US President, and it’s also the year of the first American test-tube baby and the first flight of US Space Shuttle Columbia. In Canada, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau brings the constitution home from the Queen, and the band, Queen, is at the peak of their power! On November 24 and 25 of 1981, Freddie Mercury and the boys from Queen take the stage at the Montreal Forum for a concert film entitled We Will Rock You. Qello Concerts is celebrating the 40th anniversary of this legendary show with an amazing HD version! The show is entitled Queen Rock Montreal.

How Saul Swimmer convinced Freddie Mercury to film the show

At first, Queen was not really into doing a concert vfilm - in fact, director Saul Swimmer, who had quite the track record, having directed the movie The Concert for Bangladesh (George Harrison's iconic benefit concert in 1972), and co-produced The Beatles' documentary Let It Be, said the key factor in Freddie’s decision was the result of a trip to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. where Saul showed Freddie a three-story IMAX screen, suggesting that the frontman imagine himself onscreen. It worked. Mercury, as we all know, was a massive rock star, but he also just wanted to be loved, and this was a great vehicle for adoration, and with Mercury on board, the rest of the band followed suit.

The size and scale of the production was a bit much for audience members though, as they were forced to deal with massive IMAX cameras blocking their views from time to time. In fact, rumor has it, the band itself was not so enamored with the extent of the production. As the story goes: Saul Swimmer originally had an idea to film a Queen concert, in an extremely high 35-millimeter film. The band was not on tour at the time, so all the sound and lights, production and crew had to be re-assembled just for this occasion. Not to mention that the band was out of practice, so there was a lot of work to be done. Plus, the band didn’t get along with Saul Swimmer at all. Freddie, in particular, was not too thrilled with Saul and his way of doing things. According to band members, "this turned to something like hatred, when we discovered on the first night that Swimmer had put up his own lights on the audience, changed the colors in our lights, and had cameras all over the stage … obviously, we were not going to be able to treat it like a normal gig. It got worse on the second night, when Saul Swimmer demanded that Freddie wear the same clothes as the first night … and make the same moves … this guy had no idea that the show wasn’t choreographed … We basically did what we liked … So tempers flared … and it shows." Maybe not to the audience who were eating it up, though!

The first time Queen ever played Under Pressure live

The music was about as good as it gets! The show started with a fast and furious version of We Will Rock You, and you can really feel the band putting a lot of muscle and power into that version. It’s that power that was so striking about the band. This concert also marks the first time Queen ever played the song “Under Pressure” live. The song was wildly popular at the time, especially with the participation of David Bowie, and even though Bowie did not join the group on stage (some in the crowd were sure it might happen), they managed to pull off a killer version that had the crowd chanting for more. Little known fact: prior to becoming famous, Freddie met David Bowie at a stall where Freddie worked with drummer Roger Taylor in London’s Kensington Market, where Freddie sold Bowie, then also a struggling musician, a pair of vintage boots! So, their relationship goes way back.

Among the crowd was future Quebec rock star, Simon Fauteux, who was an impressionable young gentleman at the time - the young man, who went on to experience his own career as a singer/songwriter, with hits like “Elle,” “Laura,” and “Ou es tu,” drew inspiration from the show that essentially changed his life and made it clear for him that he wanted a life in music. Today, Simon is the founder of Six Media Marketing, and he works with acts like Ghost, Koriass, Bryan Adams, and Men Without Hats, to name a few. Simon remembers the night with crystal clarity, the barrage of sound that the band managed to create with just the four of them on stage was exceptional. Freddie was absolutely fabulous and that night, he proved himself to be the greatest and absolute best frontman in rock history. According to Simon, “The one-two punch of the opening track, the quick version of ‘We Will Rock You / Let Me Entertain You’ was tremendous! THAT’s one way to start a show. POWER POWER POWER!”

Queen in Montreal: production tricks

Incredibly, tickets for this show were in the $10 range! Imagine that! And it was a pivotal concert for many Montrealers, like Fauteux, who also says, “I remember Queen's light system which, at the time, was huge, with its removable panels - absolutely breathtaking! Not to mention Roger Taylor, the rockstar-looking drummer, was clearly an influence on some of my looks over the years!” According to Simon, and surely, this was the case for so many in attendance for the show, "that gig is by far the most significant show I've ever attended, to this day!"

The material was recorded with the highest-quality equipment, and the visuals were crisp and dynamic. There were some issues with the original footage, however, so the film was sent to the US to be fixed, through a process using algorithms, invented by John D. Lowry (from NASA) for rescuing the film from the Apollo Moon missions. We are talking major hi-tech solutions!

In fact, production-wise, they played some interesting tricks, as material from both nights has been used in the final version. In a number of instances, the footage is a mixture of camera shots from one night and audio recordings from the other night. At first the band hated the material, when it was released as a film called, We Will Rock You, but then they bought back the rights years later and re-released it with significant editing changes under the name Queen Rock Montreal. It also bears mentioning that Montreal, at that time, was a hotbed of passionate music fans (and still is today). Back then, Montrealers were renowned for discovering and supporting some of the most innovative music happening in rock circles at that time. Bands like Supertramp, Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, and a host of prog rock bands from the UK were welcomed in this city way before they created a buzz anywhere else in North America. Montreal had already gained a reputation amongst music fans and musicians, alike, of being a musical Mecca! Fans came from everywhere to experience Queen at the legendary Montreal Forum, home to The Montreal Canadiens and their 20 plus Stanley Cup banners, and the site of some of the most incredible concerts to take place in the history of Canada. For anyone who was there to witness the regal rock ‘n roll of Queen at that iconic show, it remains a memory etched in time. For those who weren’t able to be there in person, now, you can live the entire experience in glorious HD thanks to Stingray Qello Concerts!

Beyonce may be hot – OK, she is – but Tina Turner was the firestarter, the first to represent and generate pure sensuality on stage, to combine sexy songs and a throaty delivery with a tough ‘tude and a totally liberated dance style, complemented by the Ikettes, foxy dancers who could knock you over with a thrust of their synchronized hips.

Tina’s career ranged some 50 years, from her start as a teenaged partner to the nasty blues guitarist and band leader, Ike Turner, to her escape from him and into a brilliant second life as a solo star. She did several farewell concert tours, including One Last Time in 1999, when she was the sexiest 61 year-old imaginable, but would continue to say goodbye on stage until 2009.

Much of Tina’s reign as the acclaimed “Queen of Rock” can be seen here on Qello. Originally, I thought I’d be recommending Rio ’88, when she was in her saucy prime, playing for an adoring mass of fans in Brazil. As it turns out, she left her dancers home and didn’t perform one of her biggest hits, “Private Dancer.” She’s still great, but I’d suggest the aforementioned One Last Time, in which she brings on not the usual three dancers, but five, performs all her solo hits, and digs back to 1960 for “A Fool in Love,” once again reminding that, long before Fantasia on American Idol, she had cut the definitive version of that scorching number. (Fantasia, I should add, did an incredible job on the song.)

But, speaking of Ike & Tina hits, any fan of hers should also check out the oddly titled Legends in Concert: Live at the Big TNT Show. This is, actually, a compilation of Ike & Tina Revue performances from a variety of programs. Only four of the 18 tracks are from the TNT, a 1966 all-star revue. The rest are from the Ed Sullivan show, an Italian show, Playboy After Hours, and two other, unidentified television programs. The result is repeat performances of “I Want to Take You Higher” and “Proud Mary.”

Still, it’s fascinating to chart the changes in Tina’s performances—not to mention in her hair, her outfits (skimpier and skimpier; tighter and tighter), and her Ikettes. Actually, Ike Turner chose the backup singers and dancers, and controlled all the women with an iron hand, as I learned when I profiled them for a Rolling Stone cover story in 1971 (the year of their “Proud Mary”).

It was a great day in rock and roll history when Tina made her escape, and began to live out her Wildest Dreams. And that’s another concert, from 1996 in Amsterdam, that’s worth a viewing. As always, Tina is energetic, engaging, entertaining—and hot.

What got you into music?

I honestly can’t tell what got me into the music industry, but it was probably when I was ten years old, and I won Sweden’s Got Talent. That opened a lot of doors for me, meeting people and such... But in music in general? I don’t know! I’ve just been doing music my whole life. I’ve always loved singing, and I’m living my childhood dream right now!

If you weren’t doing music, what would you be doing right now?

I would probably do something in entertainment. I don’t really love school... Maybe acting, or hosting stuff like a radio host. It would be really fun because I like to talk! Or I would do something like design, something creative.

What is your favorite song of all time?

It’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen because it’s like five songs in one. It’s a masterpiece, in my opinion.

Who would you like to collaborate with?

I would like to collaborate more with girls, with women. I was so excited to collaborate with Sabrina Carpenter, and I thought she was so lovely to work with and an amazing artist. So, more girls! Kehlani is on top of my list, Ariana Grande, Snoh Aalegra… so look out in the future for the gals!

What are you working on right now?

I’ve just finished my album! It’s ready to go! I guess I’m just working on not being too nervous about it. And when it’s out, I will run back in the studio and make another album. We’re not waiting four years for the next one!

This big-band style song will put a joyous pep in your step. You won’t be able to help grinning ear to ear with this bop that’s positively bursting with good cheer. With its emphasis on love and gratitude during the holiday season, this relatively new holiday song is already a modern-day standard. Get on board with one of the happiest Christmas songs in recent years.

Michael Bublé gifts us this delightful rendition of a favourite Christmas standard. The beat is uptempo, the crowd is singing along; the holiday spirit is strong with this song. The holidays wouldn’t be complete without this popular Christmas song, released in the late 1950s. The tune has stood the test of time and is a must for any holiday get-together. The rockabilly sound, backup singers, and jingle bells makes it an irresistible festive hit. Only two minutes long, our only Christmas wish is that it was a little longer.

This old-time Christmas classic is guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit. Tony’s smooth voice and classy piano will bring a touch of vintage cool to your festivities. 5. “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” by John Lennon

This beloved song was originally written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono as a protest song against the war in Vietnam. Over the years, it’s become a holiday favorite frequently covered by other artists. The Harlem Community Choir add that touch of magic that makes you want to sing along with your near and dear ones. Spread peace, love, and goodwill to all with this enchanting tune.
