In Canada, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau brings the constitution home from the Queen, and the band, Queen, is at the peak of their power! On November 24 and 25 of 1981, Freddie Mercury and the boys from Queen take the stage at the Montreal Forum for a concert film entitled We Will Rock You. Qello Concerts is celebrating the 40th anniversary of this legendary show with an amazing HD version! The show is entitled Queen Rock Montreal.

How Saul Swimmer convinced Freddie Mercury to film the show

At first, Queen was not really into doing a concert vfilm - in fact, director Saul Swimmer, who had quite the track record, having directed the movie The Concert for Bangladesh (George Harrison's iconic benefit concert in 1972), and co-produced The Beatles' documentary Let It Be, said the key factor in Freddie’s decision was the result of a trip to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. where Saul showed Freddie a three-story IMAX screen, suggesting that the frontman imagine himself onscreen. It worked. Mercury, as we all know, was a massive rock star, but he also just wanted to be loved, and this was a great vehicle for adoration, and with Mercury on board, the rest of the band followed suit.

The size and scale of the production was a bit much for audience members though, as they were forced to deal with massive IMAX cameras blocking their views from time to time. In fact, rumor has it, the band itself was not so enamored with the extent of the production. As the story goes: Saul Swimmer originally had an idea to film a Queen concert, in an extremely high 35-millimeter film. The band was not on tour at the time, so all the sound and lights, production and crew had to be re-assembled just for this occasion. Not to mention that the band was out of practice, so there was a lot of work to be done. Plus, the band didn’t get along with Saul Swimmer at all. Freddie, in particular, was not too thrilled with Saul and his way of doing things. According to band members, "this turned to something like hatred, when we discovered on the first night that Swimmer had put up his own lights on the audience, changed the colors in our lights, and had cameras all over the stage … obviously, we were not going to be able to treat it like a normal gig. It got worse on the second night, when Saul Swimmer demanded that Freddie wear the same clothes as the first night … and make the same moves … this guy had no idea that the show wasn’t choreographed … We basically did what we liked … So tempers flared … and it shows." Maybe not to the audience who were eating it up, though!

The first time Queen ever played Under Pressure live

The music was about as good as it gets! The show started with a fast and furious version of We Will Rock You, and you can really feel the band putting a lot of muscle and power into that version. It’s that power that was so striking about the band. This concert also marks the first time Queen ever played the song “Under Pressure” live. The song was wildly popular at the time, especially with the participation of David Bowie, and even though Bowie did not join the group on stage (some in the crowd were sure it might happen), they managed to pull off a killer version that had the crowd chanting for more. Little known fact: prior to becoming famous, Freddie met David Bowie at a stall where Freddie worked with drummer Roger Taylor in London’s Kensington Market, where Freddie sold Bowie, then also a struggling musician, a pair of vintage boots! So, their relationship goes way back.

Among the crowd was future Quebec rock star, Simon Fauteux, who was an impressionable young gentleman at the time - the young man, who went on to experience his own career as a singer/songwriter, with hits like “Elle,” “Laura,” and “Ou es tu,” drew inspiration from the show that essentially changed his life and made it clear for him that he wanted a life in music. Today, Simon is the founder of Six Media Marketing, and he works with acts like Ghost, Koriass, Bryan Adams, and Men Without Hats, to name a few. Simon remembers the night with crystal clarity, the barrage of sound that the band managed to create with just the four of them on stage was exceptional. Freddie was absolutely fabulous and that night, he proved himself to be the greatest and absolute best frontman in rock history. According to Simon, “The one-two punch of the opening track, the quick version of ‘We Will Rock You / Let Me Entertain You’ was tremendous! THAT’s one way to start a show. POWER POWER POWER!”

Queen in Montreal: production tricks

Incredibly, tickets for this show were in the $10 range! Imagine that! And it was a pivotal concert for many Montrealers, like Fauteux, who also says, “I remember Queen's light system which, at the time, was huge, with its removable panels - absolutely breathtaking! Not to mention Roger Taylor, the rockstar-looking drummer, was clearly an influence on some of my looks over the years!” According to Simon, and surely, this was the case for so many in attendance for the show, "that gig is by far the most significant show I've ever attended, to this day!"

The material was recorded with the highest-quality equipment, and the visuals were crisp and dynamic. There were some issues with the original footage, however, so the film was sent to the US to be fixed, through a process using algorithms, invented by John D. Lowry (from NASA) for rescuing the film from the Apollo Moon missions. We are talking major hi-tech solutions!

In fact, production-wise, they played some interesting tricks, as material from both nights has been used in the final version. In a number of instances, the footage is a mixture of camera shots from one night and audio recordings from the other night. At first the band hated the material, when it was released as a film called, We Will Rock You, but then they bought back the rights years later and re-released it with significant editing changes under the name Queen Rock Montreal. We’ve got it in all of its glory for your enjoyment, at Qello Concerts. It’s a click away!

Queen Rock Montreal tracklist

The tracklist from the concert is a veritable greatest hits from one of the hottest bands of their time. The songs span from early rockers like “Keep Yourself Alive” from their 1973 self-titled debut album, all the way up to “Under Pressure,” the new single from their (at-the-time forthcoming) album, Hot Space. Here is the complete list of Queen Rock Montreal:

We Will Rock You (Fast Version)

Let Me Entertain

You Play the Game

Somebody to Love

Killer Queen

I'm in Love With My Car

Get Down Make Love

Save Me

Now I'm Here

Dragon Attack

Now I'm Here (Reprise)

Love of my Life

Under Pressure

Keep Yourself Alive

Drum and Timpani Solo

Guitar Solo

Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Jailhouse Rock

Bohemian Rhapsody

Tie Your Mother Down

Another One Bites the Dust

Sheer Heart Attack

We Will Rock You

We Are the Champions

God Save The Queen

It also bears mentioning that Montreal, at that time, was a hotbed of passionate music fans (and still is today). Back then, Montrealers were renowned for discovering and supporting some of the most innovative music happening in rock circles at that time. Bands like Supertramp, Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, and a host of prog rock bands from the UK were welcomed in this city way before they created a buzz anywhere else in North America. Montreal had already gained a reputation amongst music fans and musicians, alike, of being a musical Mecca! Fans came from everywhere to experience Queen at the legendary Montreal Forum, home to The Montreal Canadiens and their 20 plus Stanley Cup banners, and the site of some of the most incredible concerts to take place in the history of Canada. For anyone who was there to witness the regal rock ‘n roll of Queen at that iconic show, it remains a memory etched in time. For those who weren’t able to be there in person, now, you can live the entire experience in glorious HD thanks to Stingray Qello Concerts!

For details, click here.

Long live ROCK!

Qello Concerts by Stingray

Rock

Pop

Concert review

Stingray Naturescape

Stingray Brava

Stingray Classica

Stingray CMusic

Stingray Concerts

Stingray Country

Stingray DJAZZ

Stingray Festival 4K

Stingray iConcerts

Stingray Karaoke

Stingray Loud

Stingray Music

Stingray Retro

Stingray Vibe

Discover

Worldwide

English

<img src="https://d1epjnee0y8w64.cloudfront.net/blog/s3fs-public/2021-11/queen-rock-montreal-stream-show-40th-anniversary_0.jpg" width="1200" height="628" alt="Queen Rock Montreal - I was there for the second day of the performances. The previous night, Van Morrison made a surprise guest appearance. Would some other big name turn up and surprise us tonight?

Alas, no. But it didn’t matter; surprise guests are fun, but Eric is more than capable of keeping a crowd captivated on his own. So too was his support act, Montréal-based blues singer and two-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner, Michael Jerome Browne. Michael also played in Eric’s band, alongside Neville Malcolm on bass, Staffan Astner on guitar and Paul Robinson on drums, with Eric’s wife Ulrika Bibb popping up occasionally to sing.

Although this tour was meant to promote Eric’s new album ‘Global Griot,’ Eric only sang one track from it: ‘Needed Time,’ an old Gospel song Taj Mahal taught him. The closest we got to the concept of the new album (in which he collaborates with musicians from across Africa and the Caribbean), was when he told a story about his first trip to west Africa and sang a song he’d written about meeting the Malian singer Habib Koité - one of his collaborators on the new album. Again, it didn’t matter. Eric’s warmth and charm coupled with the stellar musicianship on display made you feel like you hadn’t missed anything.

Eric’s theme song, ‘Don’t Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down’ provided a fitting close to a sublime, intimate evening. The band's energy, humor, and particularly its varied music, drew my attention. The musicians called themselves ‘Frank Znort Quartet’. A quartet? There were over 15 people on stage!

And although quartets are mostly found in jazz, this wasn’t particularly a jazz band. The concert started off with an ode to rock 'n' roll legend Chuck Berry, who had died a couple of days prior to the show - ‘Johnny B. Goode’. Halfway through the set, the band changed gears to some Dixieland, before ending with some rock 'n' roll classics, such as AC/DC's 'Whole Lotta Rosie'. I danced from the beginning till the end. I didn’t feel like leaving Blåh (the venue), and I especially didn’t want to leave the ‘Frank Znort Quartet’. Unfortunately, I had to return to Amsterdam a few days later.

I remember calling my father afterwards and telling him I had found my goal, my 'life goal'. In a few years I would return to Blåh and convince the members of the ‘Frank Znort Quartet’ that they should expand their (already rather sizeable) big band, and add one extra member: Frederike. However insignificant my role in the band might turn out to be, I felt I needed to become a part of it. But for now, all I could do was add them on Facebook and follow them on Instagram. Just a glance of their shows could make my day! I'd describe them as 'independent' and 'hippie' (don't those two words mean the same thing, in a way?), so I should have guessed they weren't as active on social media as I had hoped...

March 2018. One year has passed since the ‘FZQ’'s (Frank Znort Quartet) last sign of life. Yet – they suddenly start posting videos, stories, and live-streams on Instagram. Happy times are here again! And life couldn’t get any better when they, out of the blue, announced an international tour in celebration of their 20th anniversary! An international tour! But where to? Naturally, I do not only focus on FZQ, but also on work, my studies, and my band, so I wasn’t really aware that Amsterdam was on their itinerary. AMSTERDAM! That’s where I live, right? Before I go to bed, I usually check Instagram-stories, and so I did last Tuesday (10 April 2018). I read FZQ’s stories about sauntering the streets of Amsterdam (I think they were heading to the Red Light District, how unusual?). The first thing I did the next morning was to text them and see if they were planning on having a gig somewhere this week.

I don’t text via Instagram, not to ‘influencers’ or ‘bands’ or vice versa: they simply never answer. But that’s not how FZQ rolls. FZQ (almost) instantly responded that they indeed were in Amsterdam and were planning to perform at the hotel they were staying at. I texted everyone I know, telling them there was a FREE (who says the Dutch are cheapskates?) performance at Eden Hotel Amsterdam that they definitely needed to check out. I was at work while texting and calling all my friends. What...? No one wanted to join? Even playing the ‘free’ card again didn’t work.

I sighed... I took off my headphones and explained my frustration to my Stingray colleagues. Wait... My Stingray colleagues! They are into music, aren't they? Karen immediately answered she would love to join after her tennis workout. And so the journey to see my favorite band started.

The concert was scheduled to start at 8 PM, so here I was, 8 PM on the dot. I was waiting for Karen since she had to bike all the way from home. In the meantime, I awkwardly had a beer between all the FZQ members. I was the only guest – so far. They looked at me and said: “Hey kid, do you have any plans tonight? You should come watch our gig …” Before they even finished their sentence I called: “HAHA! I’m here for you!”. That look on their faces, haha…! Some band from Oslo comes to Amsterdam as an anniversary trip and all of a sudden they have a genuine Dutch fan standing in front of them. Karen arrived and one of the members, Daffi, told us to come back in half an hour as they weren’t really ready to play yet.

When we re-entered you could smell beer and weed, but that couldn’t stop me from liking them. After a few minutes, they started their show. Fifteen people on one stage. The hotel stage wasn’t that big, so they were standing throughout the venue. The horn section sitting at the bar (in-between songs they sure enjoyed their pints, them Vikings…), the rhythm section on stage together with a lost trombone player and two guitarists. On the edge of the stage were four others; two singers, a ukulele and another guitarist. The power they gave as soon as the first song began was what I remembered from Oslo. A – MA – ZING. Several hotel guests stumbled into the bar and watched the show. From their eyes, I could see they enjoyed it as much as Karen and I did. The music went on and on, and the band's Norwegian fan-gang also entered the room.

As the hours passed, we remembered that our alarm clocks were set for 7 AM. At midnight we decided it would be wise to go home and get some sleep (and water). I had loved the concert, again. I hope they decide to perform again today or tomorrow.

The next day, as I walked into the office, Karen shot me a grin. Why? That was the day HAEVN presented the music of their debut album Eyes Closed: a wonderful combination of film music, electro-pop, and meaningful lyrics.

It all started in 2015 when Dutch film composer Jorrit Kleijnen and singer-songwriter Marijn van der Meer were asked to create music for a car commercial. Their collaboration resulted in a beautiful song called “Where the heart is”. That same year, they released “Finding out more”, also for a car commercial. Both 30-second songs were listed on Shazam, which motivated them to work on tracks with Tim Bran, producer of London Grammar and Birdy.

With the addition of a guitarist and drummer, the band was ready to conquer Dutch festivals! In 2016, they released “Bright Lights” and became an international success! Being very critical of their own work, they had a rough time finishing tracks for their debut album coming out this May. Their latest single “Fortitude” is also featured on Netflix’s Riverdale.

The Show

Accompanied by a beautiful string quartet, their new tracks were spot on and played perfectly. The crowd was silent during the entire concert and whenever someone would talk too loudly they would be shushed. A heavenly vibe was created by the beautiful voice of Marijn, the fragile sound of the string quartet, and the church-like décor of Paradiso.

This emotional vibe resonated most when Marijn played his guitar on “Other Side of the Sea”; a big contrast with some new songs that were a bit more up-tempo and danceable.

All in all, this was a varied concert with a perfect overall vibe, great music, and moments to remember. A good warm-up for the audience! Varying from one funky song to the other, it gave various instrumentalists the opportunity to play a solo. This made me appreciate not only the collective sound of the band but also the virtuosity of each individual player!

Solo by alto saxophonist Tiander Turpijn (picture by Karen van der Stal)

After enjoying these funky songs, it was finally time for special guest Benjamin Herman! Once elected as “best-dressed of the Netherlands”, the saxophonist looked slick as always. He started off with a couple of his self-penned songs from the album “Deal”, after which he played incredibly virtuosic solos from Amsterdam Funk Orchestra’s newest album “Pure Fiction”.

In this performance, Benjamin Herman not only proved himself a great saxophone player, he also surprised his audience with his flute skills! He played an extremely groovy lick in the chorus, followed by various solos by members of the Amsterdam Funk Orchestra. The song ended with a continuous repetition of the lick, which continued for such a long time that Benjamin Herman might have fainted. Luckily, he used circular breathing which kept him on his feet and enabled him to continue the lick for an incredibly long time. Awesome!

Benjamin Herman playing his lick on the flute (picture by Karen van der Stal)

Of course, a performance by the Amsterdam Funk Orchestra had to be closed off by a funky song. Composed by Efraim Trujillo, we were all instructed to sing along to his last song, with the lyrics “We Gotta Be Funky, It’s Gotta Be Funky, We’ll Make It Funky For You, It’s Gotta Be Funky”. Well, what’s left to be said? Funky it was!

Amsterdam Funk Orchestra playing a funky song (picture by Karen van der Stal)

Stay on the pulse of the most important stories in music. Backed by a 5 piece band, Porter’s baritone voice powerfully filled the room for almost two hours. It was easy to turn off the outside world with all its troubles and fall under Porter’s captivating spell into his soulful world of song.

Performing a selection of songs from all five of his albums, Porter opened with the ballad “Holding On”, with the first note immediately demonstrating his rich, deep voice. This opening song, about the courage and strength that love offers us, set the scene for the repertoire of the evening.

With his powerful, yet warm voice he delivered “Take me to the Alley”, a song about a leader wanting to visit the afflicted, lonely, lost souls - and to care for them - rather than be enthralled with gilded houses and shiny sidewalks. We can’t help but agree, isn’t that how we want leaders to be? His voice is authentic, with pure and clear tone, portraying an honest beauty as he holds on to notes.

Porter owned the stage, comfortable as he stood in front of the microphone to deliver his message. By not holding the microphone, his hands and arms are free to express more feeling to his performance. He kept the in-between song banter to a minimum, except when setting up “Liquid Spirit”; then he spoke of liking Montreal, its mild-mannered people, with a good vibe and good spirit. He then proceeded to bring the good vibe home to the audience, getting us to clap-along, energizing us, and including us in his gospel of song.

While Ondrej Pivec shone on the organ on “Don’t Lose Your Steam” - an uplifting, up-tempo song of hope (“young man I’m counting on you”), and quite timely call to action - Jamal Nichols delighted us with his introductory bass solo on “Papa Was A Rolling Store” (even quoting the “Smoke on the Water” riff).

“Nature Boy” was the only song Porter sang from his latest album, Nat “King” Cole & Me. With such a large repertoire of his own songs to choose from, no one could be disappointed with not having more of the Nat King Cole album. It was much more interesting to hear Porter’s songs, including the song he chose to close with, the poignant protest song “1960 What?” complete with response shouts from the band.

Porter knows who he is and knows his voice. He is charismatic and confident. He masters rhythm and phrasing, with perfect pitch and control. There is limited scat, and when there is, it is artfully embraced with the sax playing of Tivon Pennicott. Having sung for almost 2 hours, every moment, every song, every note was exquisite, as was the music and synergy from the band, all perfectly balanced for the crystal-clear acoustics of the room.

Porter’s music is of truth, hope and love, and his storytelling is engaging. While many, if not most, jazz vocalist cover standards, or revamp pop songs to the jazz style, Porter wrote most the songs he performed last night. These songs are personal, heartfelt stories; the lyrics are delivered with compassion. He sings from his soul, from his history. Sharing his message and his truth, in a gospel-like way, he sings, we listen, we clap, we hear, we hope.

In the end, Porter came back on stage for an encore. One last song to sing, one last message, one last story to share: “When Love Was King”, his spiritual lesson for us. As he left the stage, the audience rose again with a standing ovation, the room full of love for Gregory Porter.

Setlist:

Holding On (Take Me To The Alley, 2016)

On My Way to Harlem (Be Good, 2012)

Take Me to The Alley (Take Me To The Alley, 2016)

Don’t Lose Your Steam (Take Me To The Alley, 2016)

Hey Laura (Liquid Spirit, 2013)

Liquid Spirit/Wade in the Water (Liquid Spirit, 2013)

Don’t Be A Fool (Take Me To The Alley, 2016)

Bass Solo/Smoke on the Water/Papa Was A Rolling Stone (Live in Berlin, 2016)

Musical Genocide (Liquid Spirit, 2013)

Nature Boy (Nat “King” Cole & Me, 2017)

1960 What?
