Women in Music is March's Special Programming, and it's dedicated to all those female singers and artists who inspire us through their songs and stories. We have chosen 5 women who have pushed boundaries and inspire us to fight for our dreams.

Dolly Parton

Besides from being a prolific writer, Dolly Parton has been an icon in country music for decades, paving the way for female artists. One of her first singles, "Just Because I'm a Woman", tells the story of a woman taking her emancipation over a man. Released in the late 60s, the song brought the sexual revolution to the Country Music fans. Later, her song "9 to 5" is an anthem for female office workers, besides of becoming the #1 hit in 1980. The song and film 9 to 5 -in which Dolly Parton plays the role of Doralee Rhodes, gave their titles to 9to5, an organization founded in 1973 with the aim of bringing about fair pay and equal treatment for women in the workplace.

Taylor Swift

One of the most inspiring artists of our time is of course Taylor Swift. Top writer, singer, performer and Billboard's woman of the decade are just some of her numerous achievements. She champions fellow female artists and is not afraid of denouncing the "toxic male privilege" in the music industry. Taylor Swift announced that a rerecording of one of her first albums, "Fearless," will be released in April. Fearless, indeed.

Beyonce

"The most alluring thing a woman can have is confidence," once said Beyoncé. Queen B's has always been a huge supporter of different social movements and especially feminism. Her extensive repertoire contains numerous female empowering anthems: "Indepedent Women" (early days with the Destiny's Childs), "Run the World (Girls)," "Single Ladies," "Pretty Hurts" and the list goes on. Did you know that in her hit “Flawless,” Beyoncé sampled a speech entitled “We Should All Be Feminists” by the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie? When not inspiring fellow women with her arts, Beyoncé militates in favour of gender equality support girls’ education through the association she co-founded, CHIME FOR CHANGE, and the Formation Scholars award program, which “encourages and supports young women who are bold, creative, conscious, confident, and unafraid to think outside the box.”

Cher

We couldn't talk about inspiring female artists without mentioning the most fabulous female icon, Cher. Cher is the only artist in history to rank on a Billboard chart for six consecutive decades. She has one of the most prolific careers of the music history. From the hippie-girl of “Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” to the to the success of “Believe” at the age of 52, Cher as never stopped braking records and pushing boundaries. The "Goddess of Pop" and actress is also an activist for LGBTQ rights, and an icon for the gay community.

Lizzo

Not only Lizzo became the third female rapper to top the Hot 100 without a featured artist, but also became the first #1 Black solo female R&B singer on the Hot 100 since Rihanna's hit "Diamonds". Needless to say the Lizzo is one of the most successful artists of her generation. After struggling with body issues at an early age, Lizzo became an advocate for body positivity. She celebrates self-love in her songs ("Mirror, mirror on the wall, don't say it 'cause I know I'm cute.", lyrics from "Juice"), music videos (in the music video for "Truth Hurts," Lizzo marries herself!), her performances (her group of dancers, the Big Grrrls, is composed of plus-size dancers) and truly in anything else she does!

Totó La Momposina

Totó La Momposina es una carismática leyenda viva de la canción afrocolombiana, la 'Reina de la Cumbia' original, cuya vida entera se ha dedicado a representar la música de la costa caribeña de su país. Totó ha sido fundamental para mantener estas tradiciones musicales vivas, llevándolas a un público internacional. Ella continúa trabajando incansablemente para promover la música de su tierra natal, impulsada por la pasión y la alegría de la interpretación. En el 2006 recibió el premio WOMEX Lifetime Achievement Award, en el 2011 recibió el Premio Nacional de Vida y Trabajo del Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia y en el 2013 el Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mercedes Sosa

Mercedes Sosa, la cantante folclórica argentina es conocida en toda América Latina como “La voz de los sin voz”. Su repertorio políticamente cargado, siempre fue representado con una voz potente, terrenal y apasionada. Ella es sinónimo de lucha, resistencia y libertad. Su carrera abarcó casi seis décadas, lanzó 70 álbumes, ganó tres premios Grammy Latinos y recibió varios títulos honoríficos, incluido el premio Fondo de Desarrollo de las Naciones Unidas para la Mujer (Unifem) en reconocimiento a su defensa de los derechos de la mujer.

Celia Cruz

Celia Cruz "La Reina De La Salsa" interpretó canciones dedicadas a México y Cuba. Se enfocó en la pertenencia a la comunidad latina en los Estados Unidos y adoptó elementos africanos y afrocubanos en su personalidad. Su eslogan "¡Azúcar!" aludía a la historia cubana y a la violencia de la esclavitud. Caracterizada por sus vestidos lujosos, pelucas extravagantes y tacones excéntricos, Celia llegó a grabar alrededor de 70 álbumes, obtuvo 23 discos de oro y recibió numerosos premios y distinciones, incluidos dos premios Grammy y tres premios Grammy Latino.

Ana Tijoux esta entre las 100 mujeres inspiradoras e influyentes del 2020 según la BBC. Ella es una activista social muy comprometida con la defensa de la condición femenina. Ana Tijoux, es la voz de las mujeres que callan por la violencia de género. Durante más de 20 años, la rapera ha denunciado las desigualdades e injusticias sociales a través de sus canciones. p>

Ivy Queen

Antes de que el reguetón fuera un género fácilmente identificable, y mucho antes de la presencia mundial de los movimientos de justicia impulsados por las redes sociales, Ivy Queen estaba haciendo música que se enfocaba en las experiencias de las mujeres. Ivy Queen se convirtió en la primera mujer miembro de The Noise. Para cuando lanzó su tercer álbum, Diva, el reguetón estaba en vísperas de un crossover global y su álbum preparó el terreno para ello. Su canción "Yo quiero bailar" se convirtió en un himno para las mujeres de todo el mundo. Ivy Queen dijo: “El reguetón hablaba de mujeres y culos y yo hablaba de empoderamiento” Ivy Queen allanó el camino para la nueva generación de reguetoneras de hoy.!

Shakira

La cantante colombiana Shakira es una de las artistas latinas más exitosas de los últimos años y ha obtenido un gran reconocimiento internacional. Ella sabe lo que se necesita para hacer música que le hable a la gente. Con dieciocho álbumes, ha ganado 324 premios de 713 nominaciones, incluidos 3 premios Grammy y 12 premios Grammy latinos, lo que la convierte en una de las artistas latinas más premiadas de todos los tiempos. Su organización benéfica, Los Pies Descalzos Foundation llamada así por su primer álbum revelación, ayuda a los niños pobres de todo el mundo.

Ana Gabriel 'La Diva de América' ha influenciado a generaciones de fanáticos de la música desde que lanzó su carrera en 1970. Jennifer Lopez abrió el camino para una generación de latinas. Merece ser celebrada no solo por su talento como bailarina, cantante, actriz y emprendedora, sino también por su impacto. López cambió el panorama de Hollywood, aumentando sin ayuda la representación latina en el cine, la televisión y la moda. JLo recibio el premio Billboard 'Women in Music Icon' del 2020, se ubicó en el número uno de los "100 hispanos más influyentes" de People en Español en el 2007 y, en el 2012, encabezó la lista Forbes Celebrity 100.

Gloria Estefan

La cantante y compositora Gloria Estefan originalmente saltó a la fama en la década de 1970 al unirse a Miami Sound Machine. A medida que avanzaba hacia una carrera discográfica en solitario, y se convirtió en una de las primeras artistas latinas en lograr un gran éxito en todo el mundo. Si hubo una canción esencial del pop latino de los 80 que capturó la esencia de la década, es "Conga" de Miami Sound Machine. Esta y las otras canciones del álbum Primitive Love sentaron las bases para el pop latino tal como lo conocemos hoy. Gloria Estefan fusión de pop, disco y salsa vendió 100 millones de álbumes y ganó siete premios Grammy. Ha sido galardonada con el premio "Salón de la Fama" del Foro Internacional de Mujeres y recibió el Medallón de Excelencia por Servicio Comunitario 2001 del Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.

Notre programmation spéciale du mois de mars est entièrement dédiée aux femmes de la musique, qu'elles soient auteures, interprètes, ou musiciennes. La chaîne de musique que nous leur dédions saura inspirer quiconque qui l'écoutera. Nous vous en présentons ici quelques-unes.

Zaz

Zaz est une de ces artistes qui n'aiment pas la langue de bois et n'a, par conséquent, pas peur de partager ses convictions et dire ce qu’elle pense. En plus d’avoir vendu des milliers de disques dans divers pays (France, Belgique, Pologne, Allemagne, Grèce, Russie...), elle fait partie de cette génération de femmes accomplies et féministes, qui se font entendre de plus en plus dans notre société. Elle a récemment pris part à un projet de Kelly Clarkson, en enregistrant avec celle-ci la version française de « I Dare You », « Appelle ton amour ». Un duo inspirant!

Ariane Moffatt

« Aujourd'hui, je respire le féminisme », confiait Ariane Moffatt en 2018. L'auteure-compositrice est une musicienne engagée, et tout particulièrement au travers de ses œuvres. L'album Petites mains précieuses, entièrement écrit et composé par elle, aborde avec force et poésie des sujets féminins et féministes.

Il y a deux ans, à l'occasion de la journée internationale des droits des femmes, Ariane Moffatt dévoilait un vidéoclip pour sa chanson « La statue » mettant la lumière sur des centaines de femmes ayant choisi de se battre pour une société égalitaire.

Isabelle Boulay

19 Félix, 2 Victoires de la musique, une carrière internationale... Isabelle Boulay est indéniablement une artiste prolifique et accomplie. Elle parle souvent et ouvertement des femmes qui ont marqué sa vie et sa carrière, de celles qui l'inspirent. Elle a notamment partagé la scène avec l'une d'entre elles, Dolly Parton, un des symboles de la libération des femmes aux États-Unis.

Isabelle Boulay tire une grande source d'inspiration auprès des femmes de sa famille: sa mère, sa grand-mère, sa sœur, sa tante sont d'autant d'exemples de force et de résilience. La pomme ne tombe jamais très loin de l’arbre!

Angèle

Angèle est en train de conquérir le monde avec ses hits pop et percutants. Son premier album, Brol, s'est vendu à plus de 500 000 exemplaires en France et lui a valu trois récompenses aux Victoire de la musique. Au travers de sa musique et de ses paroles, Angèle se montre engagée dans diverses causes. Et dans la vie aussi. L'artiste soutient le collectif #NousToutes qui lutte contre les violences sexistes et sexuelles, ainsi que d'autres associations féministes en France et en Belgique. Elle collabore également avec la fondation KickCancer, qui lutte contre le cancer pédiatrique, et défend la cause LGBT.

Et ce n’est que le début! Elle vient de sortir un des plus gros succès musicaux de ce début d'année,
« Fever », avec Dua Lipa, et serait en train de préparer un nouvel album.

Elisapie

Auteure-compositrice-interprète et réalisatrice, Elisapie est inuk et est originaire de Salluit. Sa chanson
« Amak » est un hommage à la force des femmes. « Il faut accepter que la femme ait une force incroyable, plus que les hommes, ne serait-ce que parce qu’elle fait naître les êtres humains dans une brutalité incroyable », confiait-elle en 2018.

L'artiste se considère comme féministe, et est une inspirante porte-parole de sa communauté. Lors du lancement de son album The Ballad of the Runaway Girl, Elisapie a tenu à saluer la résilience et l’optimisme des femmes de son peuple.

If you’re of a certain vintage, it’s hard to hear this song and not see Tom Cruise in an air force jumpsuit. Sometimes love feels like blasting off the earth in a supersonic military jet. It may be hard to breathe up there, but it sure feels great!

9 - “I Wanna Know What Love Is” - Foreigner

A hit mocked by many. Yet those same mockers will secretly crank this one in the car. It’s the ultimate power ballad and a reminder that love humbles us all (even one of the era’s richest rock stars is reduced to begging when it comes to love).
